New Opportunities Could Inject Some New Life Into Oregon, Washington All-Time Indoor Best Lists By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor These lists are a work in progress. Indoor track in the Northwest has been a piecemeal affair for decades, but it could gain some consistency with the advent of a new indoor facility in Spokane, The Podium. Unlike the bulk of the states east of the Mississippi, and in hotbeds like New York, New Jersey and Virginia, the winter months have historically been downtime for high school track athletes in Oregon and Washington. The University of Oregon didn't even start paying serious attention to the winter season until the early 2000s. Some of the area's outliers -- people like Rick Noji and Tommy Skipper -- did make it to indoor nationals. Or rather, they were invited. But not many over the years went. The Dempsey Indoor facility has given some opportunities over the years to high school athletes, who sometimes run unattached against college and pro athletes, or took part in a few recent high school invitationals. In Washington, where high school track coaches are not allowed to coach their athletes in the winter, nearly all organized track is handled by clubs. The clubs are a primary outlet in Oregon, too, although there is a bit more flexibility. A motivated high school coach isn't restricted from taking athletes to a meet, although often must use a club name and fund-raising apparatus to do it. The Washington list is made primarily of the record-keeping of Scott and Joan Spruill, editors of the Washington State High School Track and Field Annual. I added a few more events and relied on Jack Shepard's High School Track, the athletic.net database, and results from the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation. Who's Who In Oregon Track has not traditionally bothered with indoor marks as there are so few of them. There are places left blank where it seems there are no reasonably important marks for certain events yet. Hopefully that changes. Performances on Dempsey's oversized track are fair game. At this point in trying to illuminate this history, the only thing that matters is that they were indoors and in the winter period between cross country and outdoor track.
