Leroy Burrell Leaving Houston For Auburn JobPublished by
Burrell Moving Into SEC As Head Coach At Auburn By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor After 23 years at his alma mater, Leroy Burrell is leaving the University of Houston for the Southeastern Conference at Auburn University in Alabama. Burrell is an infuential figure in college track and field coaching. He's the President of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). And he built a powerful sprint program at Houston with longtime friend and Olympic legend Carl Lewis. Burrell coached the Cougars, dubbed 'Speed City,' to 41 conference championships and produced 150 All-Americans. Tragically, one of the best athletes he coached, his son Cameron, the 2018 NCAA champion in the 100 meters, died last summer of suicide. "When I looked at the history and tradition at Auburn along with the opportunity to compete at the highest level in the Southeastern Conference, the opportunity at this juncture of my career was too good to pass up," Burrell said in the Auburn release.
