IRVINE – As one impressive streak ended Friday in the boys sweepstakes race at the 41st Woodbridge Cross Country Classic Presented ASICS, it appears another might just be gaining even more momentum in the girls sweepstakes competition.

And as one program with national title aspirations outlasted an exceptional field to capture the girls team title at Great Park, the boys winner continued to develop the confidence that it can also be a podium contender at either championship meet Dec. 3 in Oregon or Alabama.

Sadie Engelhardt, a sophomore at Ventura High, made it five straight sweepstakes victories for California female competitors by producing the fastest time on any 3-mile course in meet history by clocking 15 minutes, 42.6 seconds.

Tyrone Gorze, a senior at Crater High in Oregon, became the first male athlete outside California to secure an individual sweepstakes crown since the event was first added to the meet schedule in 2003, running 13:42.8.

Buchanan placed three athletes in the top 13 to capture its fourth girls sweepstakes victory in program history with a 91-107 victory over Southlake Carroll High from Texas.

Cuthbertson of North Carolina took third in its Woodbridge debut with 129 points, JSerra shattered the all-time Division 4 and Orange County records with a team time of 84 minutes, 30 seconds to finish fourth with 175 points, ahead of Flower Mound from Texas at 178 points.

Arapahoe of Colorado secured sixth with 220 points, with Mountain View High from Utah placing seventh with 228 points, Newbury Park earned eighth with 237 points, Rancho Cucamonga took ninth with 286 points and Great Oak finished 10th with 315 points.

Herriman High, led by former Great Oak coach Doug Soles, had three male competitors in the top 30 to prevail with 117 points, becoming the first Utah program in meet history to win a sweepstakes championship and the first team from outside California to capture the title since Mountain Vista High from Colorado in 2016.

Noah Jenkins earned eighth in 14:01.9, William Horne was 14th in 14:12.0 and Ryland Garner placed 27th in 14:29.6 for Herriman, which also had fellow senior Luke Briggs take 44th in 14:38.3 and junior Maxwell Hofheins finish 78th in 14:52.3.

Soles secured his fifth career Woodbridge boys sweepstakes championship, in addition to Great Oak winning in 2014-15 and 2017-18.

Gorze and sophomore Josiah Tostenson, a fifth-place finisher in 13:57.4, led Crater to a runner-up performance with 139 points and Southlake Carroll of Texas took third with 160 points.

Livermore Granada led all California programs by placing fourth with 180 points, Great Oak was fifth with 205 points, followed by Utah 5A rivals Mountain View (214) and Orem (257) securing sixth and seventh.

San Clemente and Conroe The Woodlands from Texas ran to a 265-265 result, with the Tritons prevailing on a sixth-runner tiebreaker to take eighth, and Ventura was 10th overall with 351 points.

Tayson Echohawk of Orem edged Liam Heninger of Mountain View for the second time in three head-to-head meetings this season, taking runner-up by a 13:49.3 to 13:55.2 margin.

Jason Parra, a junior at Long Beach Millikan, was the top California finisher in fourth, running 13:56.5 and West Ranch standout Billie Issa secured sixth in 13:57.9, increasing the total number of male athletes in meet history to eclipse the 14-minute barrier to 17 overall.

Carson Noecker, the Class C state champion from Hartington-Newcastle in Nebraska, continued his outstanding unbeaten run by winning the boys rated competition in 13:49.7, which was the third-fastest time overall from all combined races.

Noecker hasn’t lost a cross country race at any distance since Oct. 8, 2019, and his trip to compete under the lights in California marked the first plane flight of his career.

Southlake Carroll and Herriman both showcased their depth in the rated race. The Dragons had their ‘B’ lineup prevail by a 143-183 margin over the Mustangs and their ‘B’ team.

Payton Godsey, a junior at Oaks Christian High, clocked 15:51.9 in the girls sweepstakes to join Engelhardt in increasing the all-time list of female sub-16 performers to 10 overall.

Samantha Humphries of Flower Mound took third in 16:03.2, with Alexandra Walsh of Southlake Carroll High in Texas finishing fourth in 16:03.5.

Arapahoe teammates Emily Lamontagne (16:05.4) and Ava Mitchell (16:11.8) were fifth and eighth overall, with Stella Kermes leading Cuthbertson by securing sixth in 16:09.0.

Brynn Garcia, a sophomore, led JSerra by taking seventh in 16:09.7, with Mountain View sophomore Julie Moore finishing ninth in 16:11.9.

Sydney Sundgren was 10th in 16:14.7 for Buchanan, with sophomore teammate Elle Lomeli placing 11th in 16:15.3 and freshman Kynzlee Buckley finishing 13th in 16:19.6, as the Bears rebounded from a third-place finish at Woodbridge last year.

Sierra Cornett, a sophomore, secured 28th in 16:42.8 and senior Caroline Mendyk was 41st in 17:01.3 for Buchanan, which added to sweepstakes crowns won in 2005, 2017 and 2019.

Lydia Beus, a senior, triumphed in 16:29.8 and junior teammate Ava Trimble ran 16:43.8 to place fourth, leading Orem to the girls rated race championship by a 143-152 margin over La Canada.
