Saratoga Springs seeking potential showdown at Great American against Cuthbertson, but weather conditions and travel logistics could jeopardize first appearance in North Carolina since 2018; Buchanan continues to strengthen its case for top spot after Woodbridge victory, with Niwot looking toward first big test at Desert Twilight Festival

With the challenges created by travel logistics and uncertainty surrounding course conditions as a result of Hurricane Ian, a potential showdown of top-five programs Saturday at the Great American Cross Country Festival Presented by Garmin could either be in jeopardy of materializing or compromised significantly.

Saratoga Springs hasn’t traveled outside of New York for a cross country competition since winning Nike Cross Nationals in 2019 at Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland, Ore.

The Blue Streaks returned to Oregon in 2021 to race at Hayward Field for Nike Outdoor Nationals, but haven’t been to WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C., to compete at Great American since placing second in the Race of Champions in 2018.

Saratoga Springs is entered in Saturday’s event, but the status of the event,  as well as their participation and a possible matchup against No. 5 Cuthbertson High of North Carolina remains unknown.

The Blue Streaks, who have won nine times at Great American, are seeking their first title in the Garmin Race of Champions since 2011.

The Saratoga Springs lineup could also potentially be bolstered by the return of senior McKinley Wheeler to provide support for Emily Bush, Anya Belisle, Alycia Hart and Sheridan Wheeler.

Cuthbertson, which took third Sept. 16 in the Bob Day sweepstakes race at the 41st Woodbridge Cross Country Classic Presented by ASICS at Great Park in Irvine, Calif., is also looking for senior Lillian Nasta to add depth to a lineup that includes Stella Kermes, Charlotte Bell, Alyssa Preisano, Justine Preisano, Josie Schihl and Ava Waters.

Buchanan High of California continued to close the gap against Saratoga Springs by not only winning the Bob Day sweepstakes race at Woodbridge for the third time in six years and fourth in program history, but following with another impressive performance Sept. 23 at the 48th Douglas P. Rudolf Invitational at Mooney Grove Park in Visalia, Calif.

Sydney Sundgren, Elle Lomeli and Kynzlee Buckley all ran within five seconds of each other at Woodbridge, with Grace Hutchison rebounding with a strong effort to place second overall behind Sundgren at Douglas P. Rudolf for Buchanan.

Southlake Carroll evened its season series with Texas 6A rival Flower Mound at Woodbridge, with the Jaguars affected by Nicole Humphries colliding with a pole in the final mile that caused her to fall back more than 40 spots.

The Dragons, led by Alexandra Walsh and Ava Bushaw, will look to continue their momentum Saturday at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival by running on the Arkansas cross country course at Agri Park in Fayetteville.

Niwot High of Colorado will face its first significant challenge of the season Friday at the 16th Desert Twilight Festival at Coyote Run Golf Course at Leisure World in Mesa, Ariz.

The Cougars captured sweepstakes titles in 2019 and last year, looking to add another victory in a field that includes Colorado rivals Valor Christian and Air Academy.

Madison Shults, a Stanford commit, along with Mia Prok and Bella Nelson lead the Niwot lineup, which is also expected to showcase freshmen Anna Prok and Addison Ritzenhein.

Despite a one-point setback Sept. 17 against Prospect at the Richard Spring Invitational at Detweiler Park, York High from Illinois relied on a runner-up finish from senior Bria Bennis in 17:04.47 to triumph for the second time in three meetings this season Sept. 24 at the Palatine Meet of Champions Invitational at Deer Grove Forest Preserve.

JSerra, which continued to demonstrate its national presence in cross country following a pair of successful showing the past two years at Nike Outdoor Nationals by placing fourth at Woodbridge, relied on sophomore Brynn Garcia, plus freshmen Summer Wilson and Kaylah Tasser all finishing in the top six in the Division 1 senior/invitational race Sept. 24 at the 48th Dana Hills Nike Invitational to secure the team title for the first time in program history.

Wayzata shined on home soil by rallying in the final two kilometers to edge Cherry Creek of Colorado by one point in the gold race, with defending champion Olathe West of Kansas taking third Sept. 23 at the Roy Griak Invitational at Les Bolstad Golf Course in St. Paul.

Abbey Nechanicky secured the victory for the Trojans, who relied on significant moves from Teegan Anderson, Grace Mignone and Maddie Gullickson to overcome a projected 35-point deficit at the 3-kilometer mark.

Lone Peak produced its most complete performance of the season Sept. 23 at the TwiKnight Invitational at Art Dye Park in American Fork, securing a 22-63 victory against its Utah 6A rival.

Lone Peak had six of the top eight athletes in the race, led by junior Andie Aagard clocking 16:27.12.

Cicero-North Syracuse of New York demonstrated its postseason potential Sept. 24 at the Baldwinsville Invitational, relying on four athletes finishing in the top nine, including North Carolina State-bound Kate Putman, to edge Fayetteville-Manlius by a 41-47 margin.

Izzie Sullivan triumphed for Fayetteville-Manlius in 17:30.2, with Putman clocking 17:41.4. Sophomore Gabby Putman and seniors Hannah Boyle, a Penn State commit, along with Marissa Navarra all finished in front of the No. 3 scorer for the Hornets.

Summit High from Oregon prevailed Sept. 24 in the Jim Danner Championship race by a 110-135 margin against Rancho Cucamonga of California at Nike Portland XC, led by Ella Thorsett taking third in 17:48.3.

Timpanogos High of Utah, led by third-place finisher Raygan Peterson clocking 17:55.1, won the elite race with 82 points at the Bob Firman Invitational at Eagle Island State Park in Idaho.

Hilliard Davidson of Ohio continued to showcase the strength of the Midwest Region by achieving an 81-95 victory Sept. 16 against Holland West Ottawa of Michigan in the elite race at the MSU Spartan Invitational at Forest Akers East Golf Course.

Seniors Caitlyn Jones and Dillon Sweetman helped Hilliard Davidson place four athletes in the top 20 to overcome sophomore Helen Sachs and senior Arianne Olson taking the top two spots for Holland West Ottawa.
