Boys Regional Rankings - 10/6/2022

The loss of the Great American XC Festival in North Carolina last week due to heavy rains caused by Hurricane Ian meant the loss of an opportunity for some teams in the Southeast and elsehwere last weekend.

One team that was able to pivot was Jesuit of New Orleans LA, which made the mid-week decision to change its travel plans and go to the Nike XC Town Twilight in Terre Haute, Ind. instead. It was a decision that paid off as the Bluejays got a chance to take on some of the best teams in the Midwest and beat them.

Jesuit showed resiliency and the strength of its pack while splitting 41 seconds on its scoring five, led by sophomore Brady Mullen. The team's top runner in 2021, senior Michael Vocke, sat out but could be available later.

It's not easy to unseat the deep group at Southlake Carroll, which won the Chile Pepper Invitational, but Jesuit has moved to No. 1 in the South.

In the Heartland, the Roy Griak Invitational sets the order going into October and Dowling Catholic of Iowa won it with 153 teams to beat a group of top Minnesota teams. Jackson Heidesch finished second overall in the race to lead the Maroons.

Carmel, second to Jesuit at the Nike XC Town Twilight, continues to lead the Midwest and the teams ranked behind the Greyhounds are the 3-4-5-6 finishers in the teams standings from last Saturday night.

In New York, new No. 1 St. Anthony's will get a chance to race Corning-Painted Post and Northeast No. 1 Christian Brothers this weekend in the Eastern States Championship race at the Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park. St. Anthony's pack running and string of wins has at least momentarily carried it past Corning, the preseason No. 1. Fairport edged Corning last weekend at the McQuaid Invitational, but the Hawks didn't have all of their top runners in the same race.

Episcopal Academy of Pennsylvania makes its debut in the regional rankings in the Northeast after putting five scorers under 16 minutes on the way to winning the White Division race at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh.

The top five in the Northwest remains the same this week, but Eastlake WA is close to cracking the top five after staying within 11 points of Jesuit at the Nike Twilight meet. Those two teams will see one another again this weekend at the Hole In The Wall Invitational in Lakewood. Rocky Mountain ID (Bob Firman), Central Catholic (Champoeg) and Lincoln (Nike Portland XC and Sunfair) have all won big meets in the past two weeks.

In the Southwest, the order is constantly changing among the elite teams in Utah and Colorado. Valor Christian's victory over Colorado schools Cherokee Trail and Niwot brought a bit more clarity but all three teams were separated by 12 points. Herriman seems to have a leg up in Utah, but Mountain View, Riverton, American Fork and others are not far behind.

The Clovis Invitational this weekend in California is expected to include the highly anticipated first big effort of the season for Newbury Park and whether the team is improved over last year's historic run.
