Young teams at Lone Peak of Utah and Rancho Cucamonga from California show significant poise to secure impressive wins, with Flower Mound edging rival Southlake Carroll in latest matchup of Texas 6A rivals ahead of UIL state meet

Two of the youngest girls rosters in the nation demonstrated impressive composure and maturity during a four-day span, with Lone Peak High from Utah – with three freshmen and no seniors in its lineup – winning its third Utah Class 6A state title in the past four years Tuesday at the Regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City, following the Division 1-2 team sweepstakes victory Saturday by Rancho Cucamonga High from California at the 74th Mt. SAC Invitational Presented by Nike.

Rancho Cucamonga has a pair of freshmen and no seniors in its top five, which achieved a spread of less than 30 seconds to prevail by a 38-93 margin against Great Oak High, which hadn’t lost to a Division 1 opponent at the Mt. SAC Invitational since 2008.

Junior Madilyn Siana ran 17 minutes, 54 seconds on the 2.93-mile layout at Mt. SAC, leading five scorers in the top 11 for Rancho Cucamonga, which also had sophomore Nicole Alfred (18:10) secure sixth, junior Jaden Miura (18:23) take 10th and freshmen Braelyn Combe (18:12) and Malia Reinhold (18:23) place seventh and 11th, respectively.

Rancho Cucamonga has yet to face reigning California Division 1 state champion Buchanan, but has shown significant improvement since a runner-up effort Sept. 24 by a 110-135 margin against Summit High from Oregon in the Jim Danner championship race at Nike Portland XC at Blue Lake Regional Park in Oregon.

Lone Peak, which lost to American Fork in its first two meetings of the season and three times overall in advance of their matchup in the state final, had six athletes finish in the top 11 to produce a 30-57 victory against the reigning 6A champion.

Andie Aagard, one of the most accomplished young mountain bike competitors in the nation, captured the individual crown for Lone Peak by covering the 5-kilometer layout in 17:26.6 in only the fourth cross country race of her career.

Junior Addie Meldrum finished fourth in 18:12.7, freshman Anna Bybee secured seventh in 18:27.1, sophomore Boston Bybee earned eighth in 18:28.1 and ninth-grade twin sisters Brielle Nilsson (18:31.7) and Zoey Nilsson (18:31.9) were 10th and 11th, respectively for the Knights, who also won 6A titles in 2019 and 2020.

Lone Peak will look to use the next month to continue its development in preparation to challenge the top programs in Colorado on Nov. 19 at NXR Southwest at the Coyote Run Golf Course at Leisure World in Mesa, Ariz.

The Knights won the NXR Southwest title in 2019 with a lineup that includes two sophomores and a pair of juniors, before finishing fourth at Nike Cross Nationals in Oregon.

Another significant national matchup this week involved Flower Mound and Southlake Carroll squaring off in Texas in the UIL 6A Region 1 championship race Monday at Mae Simmons Park.

Flower Mound relied on a victory from Samantha Humphries in 17:19.4 on the 5-kilometer layout and sister Nicole Humphries taking third in 17:25.5 to edge Southlake Carroll by a 55-56 margin.

Southlake Carroll, led by a second-place finish from Ava Bushaw in 17:25.0, competed without junior Alexandra Walsh, who took 23rd in the 6A District 4 race Oct. 13 at Bob Jones Park.

Flower Mound and Southlake Carroll will battle for 6A supremacy Nov. 4 at the UIL state meet at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

Led by Natalie Cook, now a freshman at Oklahoma State, Flower Mound captured the 6A title last season.

The SCAC Conference Championship and Albany County Championships in New York both produced results that continued to add intrigue to the race to determine the No. 2 team in the state behind reigning Class A champion Saratoga Springs, resulting in Fayetteville-Manlius finding itself in the unfamiliar position of not being included in the national top 30.

Cicero-North Syracuse prevailed by a 46-59 margin Oct. 19 against Fayetteville-Manlius for its second victory this season against the Hornets, who competed without sophomore Izzie Sullivan.

Kate Putman, a senior, won the 5-kilometer race in 17:30.3 and sophomore Gabby Putman placed second in 17:51.9 for Cicero-North Syracuse, which raced without senior Hannah Boyle.

Bethlehem Central achieved a 21-63 victory Oct. 21 at the Albany County Championships against Shaker.

Rylee Davis, a senior, triumphed in the 2.5-mile competition in 15:02.8 and sophomore Charlotte O’Meara was runner-up in 15:05.9 for Bethlehem Central, which placed second behind Assumption High of Kentucky by a 116-130 margin Oct. 8 in the Eastern States Championship race at the Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park and was edged 30-46 by Saratoga Springs on Oct. 15 at the Burnt Hills Invitational at Saratoga State Park.
