First Three Nike Cross Regionals This Weekend Mark Return To NXN Qualifying For First Time Since 2019; State Meet Performances Give Added Clarity To Rankings By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Yes, Nike Cross Regionals this weekend will select six automatic qualifiers to NXN and a date in Portland, and the first cross country meet at Glendoveer Golf Course in three years. But can someone please set up a dual meet between Jesuit LA and Jesuit OR? Those two are likely to miss one another this fall, but it looks like it would be very close. Jesuit New Orleans is approaching the Louisiana state meet next Monday and will pursue the RunningLane Championships after that. Jesuit of Portland was very impressive at the Oregon state championships last weekend and a theoretical 5A/6A merge would put the Crusaders ahead of No. 5 Crater, 47-82. Newbury Park, led by a trio that has signed with Stanford (Lex and Leo Young) and Northern Arizona (Aaron Sahlman) still seems untouchable as it jumps through the final hoops on the way to the CIF Championships on Nov. 26. This weekend, the two Oregon powers are going uphill to face No. 7 Rocky Mountain ID on its home turf, where temperatures are expected to be in the mid-30s. That will be three great teams running for two spots and the hope of an at-large bid that will be named later. Crater's Tyrone Gorze, Jesuit's Jacob Nenow and Rocky Mountain's Landon Heemeyer will be out front trying to give their teams one point. In the Midwest, another logjam pits the top two teams in Indiana -- No. 9 Carmel and No. 13 Zionsville -- against the best teams in Illinois -- No. 10 Plainfield South and No. 12 Hinsdale Central. At the Indiana state meet, Carmel beat Zionsville by just three points. Last weekend in Illinois, Plainfield South edged The Dale by just one. NXR Midwest could go any which way for those four teams, and additional challengers like Liberty North MO and Mason OH will hope that a great day puts them in the mix as well. In the Heartland, again, it appears that three teams could have what it takes to win the regional title -- No. 17 Wayzata MN, No. 18 Dowling Catholic IA and No. 20 Stevens Point WI -- all of them state champions looking extend special seasons. More recent strong state performances by Lincoln OR, University WV, Lone Peak UT, Farragut TN, Bentonville AR, and Grapevine and Austin Vandergrift in Texas, have lifted all of those schools into the rankings. Upcoming state meets this weekend in New Jersey, New York and Virginia could bring more clarity, and a boost, to the top teams in those states. Top 30 More news
