Union Catholic NJ

Notes:  Brothers TC (Christian Brothers Academy NJ) is in line for its 13th appearance at the national championship meet in Portland and if the New Jersey champions can do it one of the fun stories next weekend will be that of senior Nicholas Sullivan, who ran at NXN as a freshman.

CBA has been the dominant team in the region all season and has the depth necessary to make the podium in Portland. Sullivan and sophomore Joe Barrett give Brothers a 1-2 punch up front and Jack Falkowski, Conor Clifford and Lucas Ward have been reliably nearby.

The competition for the second spot could be incredibly close. Union Catholic, the second-place team behind CBA at the New Jersey Non-Public A Group and Meet of Champions meets, remains a leading contender despite the loss of star junior Jimmy Wischusen to an injury. Without him, there is less depth and a bit more pressure on fifth runner Alessandro Alvarez-Tullo

Episcopal Academy (Episcopal XC), the Pennsylvania Independent Schools champion, has a dangerous lineup that can split 35 seconds on its five scorers. If this group can squeeze down that margin even further, then Dakin Ebmeyer and Aidan McHugh, and their teammates could get the second spot.

Three more teams are carrying momentum into the weekend and could earn the second automatic qualifying berth with a strong performance. Brookline won the Massachusetts Division 1 championship last weekend, Hall of Connecticut won the New England Championship, and North Allegheny is the Pennsylvania AAA champion. All three of those teams are close on paper and match up well against Union Catholic and Episcopal School.

Defending individual champion Aidan Cox from Coe-Brown Northwood Academy NH is back to try and advance to the national meet in Portland and has been working through growing pains for the past year, but he is running well enough to be in the hunt. The favorite is Devan Kipyego from St. Raphael RI, who won big races already this fall at the Manhattan Invitational and New Englands. Aidan Ross of Uxbridge MA, Birhanu Harriman of Lebanon NH, Patrick Gandini of Gilford NH, George Andrus of Haddonfield Memorial NJ and Patrick Ditmars of Cherokee NJ (Evesham Harriers) could all be factors at the front of the race.

DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN:

North Allegheny PA

Cherokee NJ

Current Prediction:

North Allegheny PA

Union Catholic NJ

Notes: North Allegheny hasn’t fielded a full lineup at the regional meet since a third-place finish in 2018, but the Tigers are ready for a breakthrough performance to become only the third Pennsylvania girls program to qualify for the national meet, despite having only one senior on the starting line at Bowdoin Park.

Pennsylvania hasn’t produced an NXN qualifier since Pennsbury in 2015, capping a four-year stretch where the state had a total of five appearances in Oregon. Pennsbury also advanced in 2012 and 2013, with Unionville qualifying in 2013 and 2014.

Wren Kucler, Eva Kynaston, Robin Kucler, Erin McGoey, Grace Rowley, Camille Swirsding and Kendall Lucas will represent North Allegheny, competing as Wexford Flats, following a fifth consecutive Class AAA state championship.

New Jersey leads all states in the region with its consistency and depth of appearances, but it might not be the familiar face of North Hunterdon advancing to Oregon this December.

Union Catholic prevailed Nov. 12 at the New Jersey Meet of Champions, even more impressive considering the Vikings achieved the feat without junior standout Peyton Hollis in the lineup.

But Union Catholic had Kaleigh Gunsiorowski, Courtney Kaiser, Leilani Gibson join freshmen Emmy O’Hearn and Ella Solorzano to edge Haddonfield Memorial by a 79-88 margin, giving the group confidence it can secure an automatic berth and advance to Nike Cross Nationals for the first time in program history.

Haddonfield Memorial, competing as Haddonfield Running Club, is also pursuing its first NXN appearance and is led by Riley Austin, Riley Slootsky and Ava Thomas.

The top two programs from last year’s regional, Cherokee and Ridgewood from New Jersey, are not scheduled to compete at Bowdoin Park.

With New England team champion Glastonbury of Connecticut not expected to race at NXR Northeast, runner-up Champlain Valley Union from Vermont is looking to equal the girls regional record of North Hunterdon by qualifying for NXN for a fourth time.

Estella Laird, Amelie Scharf, Alice Kredell and freshmen Audrey Neilson, Charlotte Crum and Lydia Donahue are motivated to lead Champlain Valley Union back to Oregon for the first time since 2018.

Cassidy Roop of North Hunterdon is the top individual returnee following a third-place finish last year.

Jolena Quarzo of Brownsville Area in Pennsylvania, Cate DeSousa of Red Bank Catholic in New Jersey, Tess Drury of Mt. Mansfield and Scarlet Stimson of Essex in Vermont, Sydney Kelleher of New Milford in Connecticut and Jessica Deal of Mount Hope in Rhode Island are all contenders for the five individual berths to race Dec. 3 at Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland.
