High school standouts Jackson, Birnbaum, Burns, and Ince to compete in Seattle on June 14

SEATTLE, Wash. - The fields are coming together quickly for the 2023 Brooks PR Invitational, set to take place on June 14, as five 2022 champions return to defend their titles in Seattle. Sprint standout Shawnti Jackson and distance stars Simeon Birnbaum, Connor Burns, and Ali Ince return to the event, as does 2022 Junior PR champion Paige Sheppard.

Jackson, who won the girls’ 2022 Brooks PR Invitational 100m in 11.35 and ended the season with a 100m bronze medal at the World Athletics U20 Outdoor Championships in Colombia, returns having had a fantastic 2023 indoor campaign. The University of Arkansas signee seeks even faster times this year and will find herself amongst an all-star field of competitors in Seattle.

Last year in Seattle, Birnbaum made history becoming only the third junior to crack the magical four-minute barrier in the mile, winning in 3:59.51. In the boys’ two mile, Burns ran away from the field late to earn the victory in 8:45.52. Burns also broke the four-minute mile barrier in 2022, running 3:58.83, becoming the second junior to break the mark. The duo, both headed to the University of Oregon in the fall, will go head-to-head at the Brooks PR Invitational in the mile.

In the girls’ 800m, Ince had a field day, winning by nearly three seconds in 2:04.14. She is not looking to simply repeat as 800m champion in 2023, instead she’s looking to three-peat, having also won the 800m contest as a freshman in 2021.

Similar to 2022, the Junior PR portion of the Brooks PR Invitational gives middle school athletes a chance to run incredible times against national-class fields. The fifth returning champion is 2022 Junior PR girls’ 1600m winner Sheppard. As a seventh grader, Sheppard won the event in a staggering 4:52.65, winning by four seconds.

More committed athletes will be announced over coming weeks, as the 2023 Brooks PR Invitational once again will showcase the nation’s best sprinters and distance runners.

Spectators will once again receive free entry into the Brooks PR Invitational, this year hosted at Renton Memorial Stadium. For those hoping to watch online, the live webcast will be streamed live via RunnerSpace.
