Issam Asinga from Montverde Academy FL continued on a trajectory toward sprinting stardom this spring and Sunday's achievement was one for the books.

Competing for Celerity Athletics, Asinga ran 9.86w in the prelim and then 9.83w in the final of the men's 100-meter dash at the PURE Athletics Spring Invitational in Clermont, Fla.

Those the two fastest times ever run by a high school athlete under any conditions.

"I think anytime you have a chance to go up against a reigning World Champion it's an incredible opportunity," Asinga's coach, Gerald Phiri, said. "Issam displayed a great level of composure and maturity. From a technical standpoint I was not happy with his transition but overall a spectacular performance."

And in the final, Asinga beat world champion and American record holder in the 200 meters, Noah Lyles of adidas, who finished in 9.92.

The wind reading on the final was +2.6 m/s.

"Issam has a tremendous accelerative power and his ability to stay composed under pressure (is impressive)," Phiri said. "Our goals have not changed. The HS records 10.00 and 20.09. We also want to advance as far as possible at the World Championships in August."

Adaejah Hodge, also a Montverde Academy student representing British Virgin Islands, ran a US#1 time of 11.12 in the 100 meters, which was wind-legal. In her final, she beat German Gina Lückenkemper, the 2022 European champion in the 100 meters, who was second in 11.14.

In the 200 meters, Hodge beat former USC star Angie Annelus, who finished second, 22.76w to 23.20w (+2.5).
