Camacho-Bucks Wins Fight For First in Thrilling 3,200m at Loucks Games

A spectacular weekend at the 55th Glen D. Loucks Games in White Plains, N.Y. has produced some of the top performances in New York. The three-day meet concludes on Saturday. 

In a high-quality boys 3,200 matchup, Antonio Camacho-Bucks of Centennial MD edged out a diving Aidan Cox (Coe-Brown NH) for a hard-fought victory. 

Cox took over the lead at 1,200 meters and led until the final 100 when Camacho-Bucks caught him. The two runners were side by side to the finish line. Camacho-Bucks stayed on his feet and won it in 8:58.32 and Cox was second in 8:58.35.

In the girls 3,200 meters, U.S. U20 cross country team member Zariel Macchia (William Floyd NY) was shadowed by Emily Bush of Saratoga Springs NY for 7 laps before powering away over the final 400 to repeat as winner in 10:17.16, the best time in New York so far in 2023. Bush ran 10:23.24.

Two of New York’s best faced off with in the girls 800 meters with Kate Putman (Cicero North Syracuse NY) and defending champion Angelina Napoleon (Allegany Limestone NY) fighting it out down the final straight. Putnam reached the finish line first, in 2:06.50 to Napoleon's 2:06.95.

In the boys 200 meters, Marcus Nahim of Iona Prep lowered his state-leading time to 21.57 in the prelim and then went onto win the final in 21.58. 

Ashley Fulton of Elmont Memorial posted the fastest qualifying time in the trials and then took the girls 200 meters final in a state leading 24.03 seconds. 

Devan Kipyego of St Raphael Academy RI went through the first 400 in in fifth place but moved up over the final lap to win in the top heat of the boys 800 meters in 1:51.83.

In the unseeded boys 800, early leader Travis Wolfe-Thompson of Brooklyn Tech was caught by the field but the junior managed to hold on for the win in 1:56.34. Henry Reinke of Beacon NY was second in 1:56.37. 

Jacob Cookinham of Bishop Strang MA produced the top field event performance on Friday, throwing 63-9.75 to win the boys shot put by 12 feet.

Thursday Relay Highlights

Boys East Coast DMR  - St Anthony's NY pulled away from the field win crossing in 10:22.77, the No. 3 time in New York State this season.
 
Girls East Coast DMR - Running without Emily Bush (taking the AP Physics test), the Penn Relays champions and Loucks defending champions Saratoga Spring ran away from the field for the win in 11:50.97.
 
Boys East Coast SMR - Horace Greeley NY led wire to wire to win in 3;28.97 the US#11 time and tops in New York. 
 
Girls East Coast SMR - Guilderland NY followed the lead of Greeley leading wire to wire for the win. The upstate New York school was the only team to crack four minutes, winning in 3:55.95 for the US#4 time.
