Amare Harlan Lowers Utah Sprint Records; Lone Peak Girls Win 5th Straight 6A Title, Corner Canyon Boys Take 4th In A Row

Senior Amare Harlan of Fremont redefined sprint speed for Utah girls this season and her state meet performances in the 100 meters and 200 meters finals at BYU established new all-time state bests. 

Harlan won the 100 meters in 11.43 seconds and won the 200 in 23.30 seconds. She also won the long jump with a mark of 19-2.25.

Another state record came from the distance crew at Herriman, which ran US#5 7:39.63 to win the 6A boys 4x800 relay. 

Daniel Simmons of American Fork, one of the top distance runners in the country, won the 6A boys 3,200 meters in 8:52.14 and then returned to win the 1,600 in 4:10.48.

Skyridge’s Smith Snowden won a close 6A 100 meters final over Gabe Remy of West Jordan, 10.59 to 10.60. Snowden also won the 200 in a photo finish over Remy after both were timed in 21.40 (21.392 to 21.394). 

Layton’s Tyler Poole won both the shot put (58-1.75) and discus (174-8).

Spencer Kirkham helped lead Corner Canyon to a title defense in the 6A boys team standings with his win in the 300-meter hurdles in 38.09. The Chargers won three relays titles -- 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 -- and also finished fourth in the 4x800.

Lone Peak extended its dominance in girls track with points coming in 12 of 18 events. Sabrina Fairbanks and Lucy Jeppson went 1-2 in the pole vault, Addie Meldrum won the 1,600 meters, and Nadia Chiara won the 300 hurdles.

Eden DeVries of Weber broke a 40-year-old meet record in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking 14.03 seconds to win the 6 A title. A distant cousin, Sue DeVries, ran 14.08 in 1983.

Timpview won its first girls state championship in the Class 5A meet, while Mountain View's boys won the first first time since 2006. 

Snow Canyon's boys put together a whopping 214-point team performance in the 4A meet that included nine victories, including three in the relays. Bo Hickman won his second straight javelin title with a throw of 206 feet. His best of the season (207-5) is US#5. 

Desert Hills won the 4A girls title with 108.5 points. 

Snow Canyon freshman Amelia Nadauld swept the 4A girls sprint titles, taking the 100 (12.16), the 200 (24.93) and the 400 (57.77). She also won the long with 17-8.25 for a perfect 40 points.

Morgan swept the Class 3A team titles and it was a first for the girls team. Both Morgan teams had finished second in 2022. Lucy Tripp won the 100 (12.44) and 200 (25.96) and teammate Grace Gordon won the 400 in 56.94. 

Brogan Garrett helped the Morgan boys with his 400 meters victory in 49.01 seconds. 

North Summit won its seventh straight Class 2A championship thanks to depth that led to two relay wins. 

Jada Crockett of Rowland Hall won the 100 meters in 12.29 seconds, the 200 in 25.55 seconds and the 400 in 56.74. 

Kanab won the 2A boys title. Sprinter Travis Stewart contributed wins in the 100 meters (11.02), the 200 (22.78) and the 400 (49.61). He also took fourth place in the javelin. 

Panguitch swept the boys and girls 1A titles for the third consecutive year. The girls team swept the three relays. 

Jonathan Timpson of Water Canyon won the high jump with 6-7.50.
