One of the most memorable Iowa High School state championship meets showcased four teams becoming first-time winners, three schools with all-time performances, a pair of repeat team champions and the conclusion to one of the great sprint careers ever highlighted at Jim Duncan Track and Drake Stadium.

During the three-day meet in Des Moines, a combined 46 meet records were set, divided equally among the boys and girls with 23 apiece.

Addison Dorenkamp, a senior at West Des Moines Valley High, produced the fastest 1,500-meter performance in Iowa prep history by clocking 4 minutes, 25.32 seconds in the Class 4A final, eclipsing the 2011 record of 4:26.39 established by Shelby Houlihan from Sioux City East.

Dorenkamp also won the 3,000 in 9:30.64 to sweep both championships after clocking the Iowa state record of 9:23.69 in April at the Drake Relays. It was her third consecutive 1,500 state title.

Keelee Leitzen from Dubuque Hempstead repeated in the Class 4A girls 800 final, clocking 2:09.15.

Dawson Dougherty, Jacob Doyle, Nicholas Woods and Chauncey Bodden helped Cedar Rapids Kennedy achieve the state record of 41.27 seconds in the Class 4A boys 4x100-meter relay final.

The Cougars took down the 1996 all-time mark of 41.33 produced by Iowa City High.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy received a significant test from Ankeny Centennial, which ran 41.34 for the No. 3 performance in Iowa prep history.

After just missing the state record by one-hundredth in the Class 4A girls 4x100 relay prelims, Waukee Northwest’s Aunya Van Zetten, Katie Stahl, Ayrissa Robinson and Katie Willits used the motivation to smash the mark in the final, clocking 47.22.

Waukee Northwest, which ran 47.56 in the prelims, eclipsed the standard of 47.55 shared by Des Moines Roosevelt from 2012 and Cedar Rapids Jefferson in 2015.

Waukee Northwest also took down the girls 4x200 state record set in 2015 by Cedar Rapids Jefferson, with Keziah Caldwell joining fellow freshman Robinson, Stahl and Van Zetten to run 1:39.15, lowering the previous mark of 1:39.24.

Despite its relay prowess, Waukee Northwest wasn’t able to keep pace with Pleasant Valley, which captured its first Class 4A girls team title with 92 points, ahead of the reigning champion Wolves, who accumulated 81 points.

The Spartans hadn’t won a state championship since 2015 and secured their fourth title in program history, along with Class 3A crowns in 1985 and 1991.

Pleasant Valley and Waukee Northwest battled all the way to the line in the 4x400 relay, with the Spartans just missing the state record, as Jessie Clemons, Ani Wedemeyer, Aerielle Johnson and Grace Boleyn clocked 3:48.47, edging the Wolves in 3:49.05.

Sioux City East set the state record of 3:48.39 in 2009. Waukee Northwest elevated to No. 3 in Iowa prep history.

Ankeny High prevailed in the Class 4A boys final with 112 points, the first team title for the Hawks since winning Class A in 1972. Ankeny also triumphed in 1969.

The best team showdown came in Class 3A, with Western Dubuque relying on four titles from sophomore Quentin Nauman to hold off Adel-DeSoto-Minburn by a 72-71 margin for the program’s first championship.

After finishing in a tie for the top spot last year in Class 2A with Williamsburg – elevated to Class 3A this season – Mediapolis won its first outright championship with 47 points, holding off Spirit Lake with 43 points.

Lisbon continued its Class 1A dynasty, repeating as champion with 76 points and securing the team’s fifth victory in the past decade, led by four victories from Baylor Speidel.

Van Meter secured back-to-back Class 2A girls titles with 63 points, edging Pella Christian with 60 points.

Adel-DeSoto-Minburn won its first Class 3A girls championship with 48 points, ahead of runner-up MOC-Floyd Valley with 43 points.

St. Ansgar survived one of the deepest all-time Class 1A girls team battles, capturing its first state crown with 40 points, as five schools were separated by only four points, including second-place Nashua-Plainfield at 38 points.

Nauman was one of seven individuals to win four gold medals at the championship meet, sweeping the Class 3A distance events by clocking 1:51.60 in the 800, 4:12.80 in the 1,600 and 8:54.11 in the 3,200.

Western Dubuque also prevailed in the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay in 3:28.17, with Nauman being joined by Drew Burds, Grant Glausser and Brandon Decker.

Speidel ran wind-legal marks of 10.96 in the 100-meter dash and 22.03 in the 200 final to sweep both crowns, in addition to contributing to wins in the 4x100 in 42.33 and 4x200 in 1:28.46.

Reese Brownlee, a junior at Clear Lake, won three Class 3A championships, prevailing in the long jump with a 19-3.50 (5.88m) effort, in addition to clocking 55.56 in the 400 meters and 59.83 in the 400 hurdles.

Noelle Steines from Tipton triumphed in the Class 2A girls distance events, in addition to the 1,600 sprint medley relay.

Steines clocked 2:14.21 in the 800, 4:38.46 in the 1,500 and 10:08.85 in the 3,000, as well as anchoring the sprint medley to victory in 4:06.37.

Pella Christian nearly knocked off Van Meter in Class 2A behind the efforts of Meredith Van Wyk, Rachel Kacmarynski and Bailey Vos, who ran together on the 4x200 (1:39.72), 4x400 (3:56.61) and 800 sprint medley relay (1:46.05).

Kacmarynski also won the Class 2A title in the 100 in a wind-legal 12.61, with Vos capturing the 400 crown in 57.08.

Van Wyk won the 200 championship for Pella Christian with a 25.24 effort.

Hannah Longmire of Iowa City West was a four-time winner in the girls ambulatory 100, 200, 400 and 800, with Jayden Stafford securing victories in the same events in the boys wheelchair division.

Panorama senior Jaidyn Sellers swept the girls 100 and 200 titles for the fourth year in a row, this season in Class 1A after doubling up the past three times in Class 2A. Sellers clocked 12.41 in the 100 and 25.09 in the 200, in addition to winning the 400 in 55.44.

Along with Sellers, Kadence Huck from Nashua-Plainfield won three gold medals in Class 1A, securing the 800 in 2:13.98 and the 1,500 in 4:42.13, in addition to contributing to the 1,600 sprint medley triumph in 4:09.07.

Ally Darter of Dubuque Hempstead was a three-time girls winner in the 200, 400 and 800 in the wheelchair division.

Ankeny’s title run in Class 4A was sparked by Ethan Zuber and Jake Bosch, who both contributed to wins in the 4x800 relay (7:40.34) and 1,600 sprint medley (3:24.56).

Bosch was also part of the victorious 4x400 lineup that clocked 3:14.90, with Zuber adding a 3,200 triumph in 8:59.66.

Cedar Falls denied Ankeny another title in the 800 sprint medley relay, with Mitchell Darst, William Remmert, Jarrett Kies and Jordan Townsend emerging victorious by a 1:30.32 to 1:30.54 margin. Cedar Falls achieved the No. 2 performance in Iowa prep history, trailing only the 1:30.15 effort produced last year by Johnston, with Ankeny ascending to No. 3 all-time.

Brevin Doll of Adel-DeSoto-Minburn won the 100 and 200 in Class 3A in 10.82 and 21.50, respectively, as well as contributing to a victory in the 4x200 relay in 1:25.55.

Jaden Damiano of Iowa Falls-Alden captured three gold medals in Class 2A, winning the 100 in 11.06, the 400 hurdles in 52.03 and serving as the catalyst for the 4x110 shuttle hurdles relay title in 58.70.
