Elise Cooper Runs 54.01 For One Of Several US#1s In New York By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Livingston NJ senior Jessica Oji launched the farthest indoor shot put mark by a high school girl in eight years on Saturday at The Armory Hispanic Games in New York. Oji broke her own personal best and US#1 when she threw 52-6.50 on her fourth atttempt. And then she went a foot beyond that with a huge fifth round throw of 53-6.75. Oji's winning mark is No. 9 all-time and the farthest since Alyssa Wilson's record-breaking senior year in 2017. On the track, the Hispanic Games left an imprint all over the national leaderboard. Elise Cooper of McDonogh MD ran a US#1 time of 54.01 seconds to win the girls invitational 400 as the meet produced the top three times in the country. Nicea Jones from Malverne NY ran US#2 54.87 and Cohren Corbin from North Point MD ran US#3 55.28. Cooper's sister, Elena, won the 200 meters varsity gold section in 24.24 seconds. Jordaine Johnson from East Orange NJ ran a US#2 time of 47.29 seconds to win the 400 meters and he also won the 200 meters in 21.26. He already tops the national rankings in the 200 at 21.09. Sophia McInnes from Bayport Blue Point NY ran a US#1 time in the girls mile with 4:46.98 and was one of five to go under five minutes. Tsedeke Jakovics from Old Mill Senior MD won the invitational boys mile over Marshall Vernon of La Salle Academy RI, 4:14.19 to 4:14.76. Both athletes were subsequently invited to the Millrose Games to compete in the high school mile there. Destiny Coleman from Woodlawn MD raced to a US#1 time of 7.75 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles. Bronxville NY's Wyatt Gravier lowered his season's best time in the boys 55 hurdles to 7.29, good for US#2. Luke Beattie of Warwick NY equaled his best mark in the boys pole vault when he cleared 16-3 but then took three attempts at a New York state record height of 17-1.25. Indie Wallace-Persaud of Jackson-Reed DC won the girls varsity gold section of the 55-meter dash in 7.04 seconds. The fastest times in the boys competition came in the club-unattached section, where Damilola Oyeniran from The House Running Club (DC) ran 6.33 seconds. Lexie Cole from Comsewogue NY won the girls 3,000 meters in US#5 9:56.43. National leader Ryan Buskey of Colonie Central NY jumped 6-8 for the victory but was six inches short of his best this season. Ella Michelitch from Minisink Valley NY won the high jump with a clearance at 5-6. In the boys weight throw, Charles Sullivan from Somers NY threw a US#4 distance 71-7.50. Meagan Ewers from Medgar Evers NY won the girls weight throw with a US#1 mark of 55-4.50. Gianna Mauri from Sachem East NY achieved a US#1 time of 6:50.11 in the 1,500-meter racewalk. More news |
