Tayvon Kitchen Pushes To No. 5 On All-Time Indoor 2-Mile List At The CIRCUIT ✨Published by
Chloe Huyler Outkicks Mia Sirois, Elin Latta In Nation's Fastest Girls 2-Mile This Season By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Photos by Dominick Gramarosso Tayvon Kitchen and Chloe Huyler, the cross country champions at NXR Northwest, won the first "High Voltage" of the inaugural CIRCUIT series at Chicago's Gately Park on Friday. The two Oregonians won elite 2-mile races in vastly different ways on the way to US#1 performances. Kitchen, of Crater High in Central Point, Ore., ran the No. 5 all-time indoor 2-mile with 8:41.21. Two weeks ago, he ran the No. 5 all-time 3,000 meters in Seattle. Kitchen was the only runner in the field willing to go with the pacer and the prescribed 4:16 opening mile pace. He stayed connected to the pacer Ian Torchia through 2,000 meters and then drove as hard as he could through the final laps to the finish. "We went out guns a-blazing, maybe a little bit too fast and it bit me in the butt the last few laps," Kitchen said. He won by 16 seconds. Juan Gonzalez, the Foot Locker Cross Country runner-up from Nebraska, was second in 8:57.39. Kitchen is the third Crater runner to run under 8:43 for the 2-mile in the past three years, joining Tyrone Gorze in 2023 (8:39.61 outdoors) and Josiah Tostenson (8:42.93 converted outdoor 3,200 meters in 2024). "Showing how fast I can run this early, it just makes me excited to build off that going into outdoors and see what I can do in a few months," Kitchen said. The girls 2-mile was competitive race all the way to the finish. Huyler trusted her kick and used it go get away from Illinois standout Mia Sirois and Texan Elin Latta. Huyler, of Lakeridge High in Lake Oswego, Ore., finished in in 10:03.32. Sirois of Barrington IL was second in 10:04.11. Latta of South Texas Heat Homeschool TX was third in 10:05.14. Foot Locker and NXN runner-up Victoria Garces from Midland Dow MI was fourth in 10:11.34. Those four are the fastest in the country so far this indoor season. "I had confidence in my closing speed," Huyler said. "I'm really excited." More news |
