Third time's the charm for Cole Boone.

In a third attempt at lowering the high school national record in the boys 1,000 meters this season, Boone successfully took down the 16-year-old record on Tuesday at the Virginia Indoor State Championships at Liberty University in Lynchburg.

Boone, a senior at Pulaski County in Dublin, Va., ran 2 minutes, 20.14 seconds to claim the Class 3 state individual title to better Robby Andrew's time of 2:22.28 from 2009.

In a comment on an DyeStat Instagram post, Andrews congratulated Boone on his achievement.

"Congratulations @coleboone07 huge run!!!"," Andrews said.

In Boone's previous two attempts at going after the national record this season, he ran 2:23.68 on Dec. 14, 2024, at the Liberty Christmas Invitational and 2:23.50 on Jan. 17 at The VA Showcase, which ranked No. 4 all-time prior to Tuesday's race.

Boone finished fourth in the boys 800 meters at last year's New Balance Nationals Indoor. He will head back to Boston to run the 800 meters at this year's meet, taking place March 13-16 at the TRACK at New Balance.
