Oregon Newcomer Diana Cherotich Runs School Record 10,000; Pamela Kosgei Logs No. 2 All-Time Steeplechase Time By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Ken Martinez photos Little more than a week after the University of Oregon announced the signing of Kenyan freshman Diana Cherotich, she became the first Duck to break 32 minutes in the women's 10,000 meters and logged the No. 9 time in colleigate history with 31:45.22. Oregon announced the signing on March 25. On Friday at the Stanford Invitational, Cherotich broke Jordan Hasay's 2013 school record by 21 seconds and teammate Juliet Cherubet also ran under the school record time with 32:02.78 for third place. Arkansas’ Paityn Noe ran 31:59.22 and finished second in Friday’s race. No one was more impessive, however, than New Mexico freshman Pamela Kosgei, who continued her incredible freshman season by running 9:15.93 for the second-fastest time in NCAA history. Kosgei, the sister of of world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei, won her race Friday by 45 seconds. The University of Portland's Matt Stangio, just three weeks after the tragic death of his father at the NCAA Indoor Championships, raced and won an emotional 5,000 meters in 13:24.14. Chloe Foerster of the University of Washington ran a personal best time of 4:07.32 in the 1,500 meters, good for No. 2 in program history. She won the race by seven seconds. Jenna Hutchins of BYU ran 15:16.95 for the fastest time in the 5,000 meters, second fastest in Cougars history. In the men's 10,000 meters, Washington State's Evans Kurui won the fastest section in a time of 27:37.32, followed by Lex Young of Stanford in 27:48.93 in second and David Mullarkey of Northern Arizona third in 27:51.80. Alyssa Jones of Stanford jumped near her best to win the long jump with 6.81m (22-4.25). More news |
