EUGENE - Simon Rosselli doesn’t limit himself as a competitor.

“There’s a quote, ‘You have to believe in yourself to be the best; you don’t become the best by accident,’,” he said. “I’ve tried to instill that into my life.”

Staying true to his mantra, the Mead WA junior fulfilled a historic milestone Saturday morning at Hayward Field at the Oregon Relays, breaking the Washington all-time state record in discus.

A second-round throw of 211 feet, 7 inches, which is US#2 this season, eclipsed former Rainier standout Jeremiah Nubbe’s record of 207-4 from the 2022 season, just a week after competing at the Oregon Relays himself in which he also won the competition.

“Until I got a little bit better last year, I didn’t even know who Jeremiah was,” Rosselli said. “He then became a huge inspiration, and I knew I wanted his record.”

Both of Rosselli parents were collegiate athletes at the University of Memphis. Dad played on the men’s basketball team and mom was on the women’s volleyball team. There was no background in track and field, so Rosselli picked up basketball, too.

One day after high school practice, Rosselli’s parents were late to pick him up. Somehow, he wandered over to the discus ring at the Mead track, thus beginning his curiosity of what he stumbled upon.

“I haven’t looked back since,” Rosselli said with a smile.

Rosselli’s improvement has skyrocketed since 2023 when he began throwing as a freshman. Last spring as a sophomore, he won the Washington 3A state title with a mark of 183-9, improving his freshman mark by almost 30 feet.

Now in 2025, Rosselli began his junior year with another personal best of 188-10, then five days later threw 198-1.

Two weeks have passed since his previous best, and with the help of some Hayward Magic, his discus carried itself even further than he could have ever imagined.

“When I first threw it, it felt good,” Rosselli said. “But I didn’t want to get my hopes up, so it was a good second throw in my head until I saw it on the screen when it read 211.”

His second-round throw won the competition by over 20 feet.

Put the competition aside, the same throw solidified his legacy as Washington’s best.

“It’s huge,” Rosselli said. “This is the best stage in the world. I’ve worked super hard all year-round. To get the record, to know that it’s on paper that I have it, is just huge.”
