ARCADIA, Calif. -- A storied race known for all-out eight-lap efforts took on a different feel on Saturday with five sub-four milers in the field and competing for the win.

Seldom in recent years has the Arcadia Invitational boys invitational 3,200 meters dawdled. But a 4:29 first 1,600 showed that the 2025 edition was setting up to be tactical.

And the sub-four milers were there at the end -- in the exact order of their mile PRs.

Owen Powell of Mercer Island WA, who last week ran a 3:59 anchor split for his distance medley relay teammates, ran 4:10 for the second half of Saturday night's race and won it in 8:39.86. He closed in 54.65 seconds.

"I was really excited coming into today with all the talented people in the field," Powell said. "Five sub-four guys in one race? I don't know if there's ever been a race like that. But honestly, it's not how I thought this race would have played out. I was fully prepared, mentally prepared, to go out in 4:15 or faster."

Josiah Tostenson of Crater OR was next in 8:40.95, closing in 55.22. New Zealand's Sam Ruthe, celebrated his 16th birthday by placing third in 8:43.57. Tostenson's Crater teammate Tayvon Kitchen was fourth in 8:43.94. And Tommy Latham of Marist GA was fifth in 8:45.57.

The grand total of sub-9 3,200 meters, which reached a high-water mark of 69 in the 2024 meet, topped out at 56.

The quality of the two-day meet, however, was felt throughout Saturday's array of invitational event finals.

Brandon Arrington from Mt. Miguel CA ran 10.32 to win the boys and then returned to decimate Noah Lyles' meet record in the 200 with 20.35.

The Servite CA boys, who broke the all-time California best in the 4x200 on Friday, nearly became the first team in California history to break 40 seconds in the 4x100. The Servite quartet, made up of freshmen and sophomores, ran 40.00. Then, with an all-freshman lineup, Servite won the 4x400 in 3:12.33.

Three boys threw beyond 200 feet in an epic discus competition. Simon Rosselli of Mead WA smashed his own Washington best and rose to No. 7 on the all-time list with a throw of 218-7. McKay Madsen of Clovis North CA was second with 200-9 and defending champion Benjamin Shue of Bergen Catholic NJ was third with 200-1.

Joseph Socarras of Belen Jesuit FL broke a 30-year-old meet record to win the boys invitational 800 meters. He took down Michael Granville's 1995 record with a time of 1:47.66, which is also No. 12 all-time.

Temecula Valley CA senior Jack Stadlman continued his breakout season by winning the 400 meters in 45.92 seconds, which tied for second-fastest in meet history. Stadlman had already run 45.69 but his win at Arcadia validated that and further showed the tremendous progress he has made over the past year.

In the boys 110-meter hurdles, Spencer Van Orden of Highland (Pocatello) ID smashed the all-time Idaho best with 13.59 seconds and matched the fifth-fastest performance in meet history.

A bit later in the 300 hurdles, Texan DeVonte Taylor of Bellaire Episcopal, barely held off Van Orden to win in 36.59 to 36.62. Another Idahoan, Chase Lawyer of Boise, was third in 36.98.

Alta UT junior Aidan Neal won the boys invitational mile in a time of 4:08.73.

Clovis East CA, with Marcus Salinas anchoring the team in 4:11, won the boys distance medley relay in a time of 10:10.21.

Chase McGee from Camas WA won the boys pole vault with a clearance at 16-8. Victor Olesen from Virginia, one of the top vaulters in the country, was a scratch.

Camren Smith of Quartz Hill CA, fourth at the CIF state championships last year, won the boys triple jump with a sixth-round mark of 49-6.

Quentin Mitchell from Antelope CA won the boys high jump when he made it over a new personal best bar at 6-11. He missed three tries at 7 feet after the victory was secure.

In the shot put, Shue shook off his third-place discus performance and repeated his title with a throw of 63-0. He was one of five boys to go beyond 60 feet.

Leo Francis from Santa Margarita CA won the boys long jump title with a mark of 23-9.

Josh Haven of Bellarmine CA competed in his first decathlon, earned PRs in all of Friday's five events, and scored 7,133 points to win the Arcadia Multi.
