The California Golden Bear broke his world record mark of 74.35 meters (243-11) not once, but twice in the same series, throwing 75.56m (247-10) to win the men's invitational competition. Alekna opened up with a heave of 74.89m (245-8) to eclipse his previous world record mark, which he set at last year's Oklahoma Throws Series competition. He fouled his next two throws to complete the preliminary round. In finals, Alekna went even further, throwing over an elusive 75 meters to become the first man in world history to throw the discus past that distance. As if Alekna was the only competitor to have a career day, Matthew Denny, an Australian athlete representing ASICS, also surpassed Alekna's previous world record, throwing 74.78m (245-4) to finish second overall and move to No. 2 all-time in world history. American Sam Mattis, representing Nike and NYAC, threw a personal best 71.27m (233-10) to finish third. Maggie Ewen took the win in the women's shot put, throwing 18.95m (62-2.25), On Saturday, Valarie Allman raised her American record discus standard even higher with a throw of 73.52m (241-2) to win the women's invitational competition, moving her to No. 5 on the all-time world list. It was also the farthest throw in the world by a woman since 1989. Friday's action featured both javelin and hammer. American Curtis Thompson, representing TrackSmith, won the men's javelin, throwing 81.97m (268-11). 2024 NCAA outdoor champion Rhema Otabor, now with adidas, won the women's javelin, throwing 60.03m (196-11). Minnesota's Kostas Zaltos and Angelos Mantzouranis completed a 1-2 finish for the Golden Gophers in the men's hammer. Zaltos won throwing 77.12m, (253-0) and Mantzouranis threw 76.39m (250-7) for second. More news |
