SAC By Keenan Gray of DyeStat Photo by Image of Sport American running icons Des Linden and Kara Goucher are hosting their first 10,000 meters event, Save the 10,000 With Des and Kara, on May 3 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif., allowing athletes an opportunity to earn qualifying times for national and World Outdoor Championships. Prize money of $25,000 will be allotted to the top eight finishers of the men’s and women’s races, with $5,000 going to the winner. An additional $1,000 will be given to those who complete the entire race. WATCH THE SAVE THE 10,000 WITH DES AND KARA LIVE ON RUNNERSPACE FOR FREE Jessica Warner-Judd headlines the women’s field with her long list of accolades while representing Great Britain. The two-time World Outdoor Championships finalist and 2020 Tokyo Olympian brings in a lifetime best of 30 minutes. 35.93 seconds for 10,000, which she ran at Hayward Field at the 2022 World Outdoor Championships in Eugene. She finished eighth in the 10,000 at the 2023 World Outdoor Championships in Budapest. Ethiopian Atsede Tesema also brings in a strong resume to the field with three major marathon titles underneath her belt. The two-time Chicago Marathon champion and 2016 Boston Marathon champion owns a personal best of 32:15.69 for the 10,000. Tesema last ran at the Portland Track Festival in June of 2024, running the 10,000 in 32:34.43. Cailie Logue Hughes is the top American entry in the field, boasting a lifetime best of 32:19.37 from The Ten in 2020. Logue Hughes ran a season-best at The Ten in 33:24.30 on March 29. Katie Izzo, a member of the United States’ eighth-place world cross country relay team, will race her first 10,000 of the season. She owns a lifetime best of 32:22.47. Peruvian national champion Mica Rivera will contest in her third 10,000 race of the season. The former Utah State Aggie won her first national title this year on March 28 in the 10,000, then finished sixth at the South American Athletics Championships on April 25. Her personal best is 32:31.48. The men’s field top entry features American Sydney Gidabuday, a 2024 Olympic Trials marathon competitor. His lifetime best for the 10,000 is 28:15.41, which was ran back in 2020 at The Ten. Two-time Latvian national champion Arturs Medved returns to Mt. SAC two weeks after finishing third in the men’s 1,500 at Mt. SAC Relays. Medved broke the Latvian national record for the 10,000 in May of 2024 when he clocked a personal best 28:19.49. Cael Grotenhuis, a junior at Northern Arizona, will race unattached in his second 10,000 race of the spring. The 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championship finalist in the 10,000 ran 28:25.90 at Bryan Clay two weeks ago to lower his lifetime best by over 17 seconds. Elias Lindgren, former NCAA Division III all-American, is another notable entry. His personal best is 28:49.70. Gates open to the public at Hilmer Lodge Stadium at 7 pm PT, with races going off at 8 pm and 8:45 pm. |
