Jane Hedengren, Lily Alder Lead Timpview To Third Straight 5A Title; American Fork Sweeps 6A Crowns; Kinzlee Riddle Dominates Sprints

Timpview High’s Jane Hedengren’s final state high school meet was one for the books.

The greatest prep distance runner in Utah state history, and perhaps the entire U.S., Hedengren, has totaled a staggering five national records during the 2024-2025 year, and she added to her legacy this week at the Utah High School State Track and Field Championship,s held May 15-17 at Brigham Young University.

In the 5A girls 3,200 meters, Hedengren, a senior, broke her own record by four seconds as she ran a 9:48.73. She won the 1,600 (4:56.21) and added a runner-up finish in the 800 of 2:08.49. Teammate Lily Alder won the 800 in 2:05.33. The two also ran on the winning 4x400 relay (4:01.41) to help Timpview to its  third consecutive state title with 77 points.

While Hedengren was the headliner for the girls 5A, Bonneville’s David DeGroot was not to be outdone. The junior standout state long jump record holder won the 100 (10.69), 200 (21.25), and claimed the 400 in 46.38, a current US#14 time, and won the long jump (22-6.25).

In the boys 5A team race, Hayden Arbuckle won the 3,200 (9:07.86) and helped Viewmont’s 4x800 relay team set a new 5A record of 7:42.55. He also placed fourth in the 1,600 to help his team claim the 5A state title, the fifth for the program.

Class 6A

The American Fork boys and girls swept the 6A title on Saturday. The American Fork boys claimed top honors with senior Ryker Bement leading the charge, with a first-place finish in the 1,600 (4:11.94) and third in both the 800 (1:52.26) and 3,200 (9:07.29). Teammate and fellow senior Cael Flinders won the 400 (48.34).

Herriman junior Jackson Spencer won the 3,200 in 8:56.43, the only runner to dip under nine minutes. Spencer was also part of the winning 4x800 relay (7:38.93) and 4x400 (3:15.83). Teammate Tayshuan Ogomo won the 800 (1:49.40).

Lone Peak’s Matthew Bryant won both the 6A boys shot put (63-3) and discus (197-7). He currently US#13 in the discus.

Mountain Ridge’s Kinzlee Riddle was the headliner for 6A girls as she dominated the sprints, winning the 100 (11.70), 200 (23.66) and the 400 (53.06). During the 200 preliminary on Thursday, Riddle tied the 6A record clocking 23.30.

In the field, Layton senior Burklie Burton won the shot put (41-1.75) and the discus titles (145-7) and was second in the javelin (115-10).

The American Fork girls finished with 101.50 points to repeat as state champs.

Class 4A

The Orem boys won the 4A title with 74 points, the 12th all-time for the boys program.

Crimson Cliffs’ Eli Connelly tied the 4A long jump record going 23-10.25 and also won the high jump clearing 7-feet, a current top 20 mark in the country.

In the distance events, Deiderik Witt of Timpanogos won the 1,600 (4:16.59), 3,200 (9:08.54) and placed fourth in the 800.

The Pine View girls won the program’s first 4A title since 1997 as they finished with 122 points.

Individually, Snow Canyon junior Amelia Nadauld impressed with wins in the 100 (11.82), 200 (23.96), both 4A state records. She won the long jump in a leap of 19-4.25. She also won the 300 hurdles (41.39).

In the girls 4A distance, Mountain View’s Julie Moore won the 3,200 (10:48.18) and 1,600 (5:06.45), and was the anchor on the first-place 4x800 (9:20.05).

In the throws, Pine View’s Keira Sam Fong claimed the shot put (44-4.25).

Class 3A

The Morgan boys edged out Union by less than two points to win the 3A crown. Morgan’s Kenneth Whitmer won the 110 hurdles (15.23) and high jump (6-7) and placed third in the long jump (21-4.50).

Senior River White won the 3,200 (10:29.25), 1,600 (4:56.85) and was third in the 800 (2:14.78) to guide Union to a 3A girls state title.

Manti’s Cadee Alder kicked off Friday with a bang as she not only threw a season-best in the javelin of 152-7, but her mark broke the 3A state record and is the No. 3 throw in Utah prep history. She’s currently ranked eighth in the country. She added a second place finish in the discus and third in the shot put.

Class 2A

Millard’s Ben Ralphs swept the distance events to lead his team to a 2A title. Ralphs claimed the 800 (1:59.07), 1,600 (4:29.89) and 3,200 (9:38.40).

The North Summit girls dominated the 2A meet, finishing with 165 points. Runner-up North Sevier was led by senior Trey Torgerson, who won the 100 (12.46), 200 (25.07) and 400 (56.06).

Class 1A

The Panguitch boys and girls swept the 1A state titles.

In boys action, Hudson Parry swept the sprints, winning the 100 (11.16), 200 (22.37) and 400 (49.52), while Valley senior Warren Spencer claimed the 800 (2:03.19), 1,600 (4:44.59) and 3,200 (10:21.58).

Paige Smith of Rich broke the 1A state high jump record as she cleared 5-6.25. She also won the 800 (2:20.33), 1,600 (5:18.27) and finished runner-up in the 3,200 (11:34.47)

To say the Panguitch girls have a monopoly on the throws, may be an understatement. In the shot put, the team claimed the first five places, while the javelin featured Panguitch winning 1-4 and seven of the top eight. Byntlee Owens  won the shot put (35-10.75), while teammate Kadee Harland won the javelin (131 feet) and was fifth in the shot put. Panguitch finished fourth in the discus and also claimed the sixth, seventh and eighth place spots.

6A: American Fork boys 132.50 points, American Fork girls 101.50 points

5A: Viewmont boys 84 points, Timpview girls 77 points

4A: Orem boys 74 points, Pine View girls 122 points

3A: Morgan boys 98.50 boys, Union girls 127 points

2A: Millard boys 110.50 points, North Summit girls 165 points

1A: Panguitch boys 155 points, Panguitch girls 157 points
