Owasso's Bella Nelson Breaks Oklahoma's All-Time 800 Record As Part Of Historic Triple

Bella Nelson’s final state high school track meet was one for the books. The Owasso senior won the 3,200 in a 6A state record time of 10:33.36, claimed the 1,600 in 4:51.24 and also broke an all-time state record in the 800 clocking 2:07.83.4

Nelson, who will stay in state and run for Oklahoma State University this fall, was also part of the winning 4x800 relay (9:18.27) to guide her team to a fifth place team finish at the 5A/6A Oklahoma State High School Track and Field Championships held at Western Heights High School.

The 6A state title was won by the Edmond Memorial girls with 110.50 points. 

Mustang, the 2024 team champion, won the 4x1 (46.16) and 4x2 (1:37.14) relays in new 6A state records. Kassidi Watkins also defended her long jump title for Mustang, bettering her own meet record, going 20-7.50. She also won the 100 hurdles (13.87). 

Moore senior Libby Jaques, ranked seventh in the country, won the 6A shot put in a meet record 47-3.

The Jenks boys scored 116 points to win the 6A state title. 

On the track, one of the feel good stories was Jarek Watie of Union, who suffered a gunshot wound to the face last fall. He successfully defended his 400 meters title (48.00) and ran on the winning 4x100 relay (40.86). Teammate Kaden Berry won the pole vault by clearing 16 feet. 

Sophomore Daniel Yebit from Yukon jumped 6-10 to win the boys high jump. 

In 5A action, the Claremore girls tallied 83 points to win the 5A state title. Emma Robinson led the team effort with wins in the 1,600 (5:14.35) and 3,200 (11:07.69), while finishing second in the 800 (2:19.70). Claremore won the 4x100 (48.38) and 4x200 (1:42.44) as well. 

Saniya Craven of Glenpool set a 5A record in the 100 dash, clocking 11.67. She also won the 200 (24.44) and long jump (19-1.50). 

The Carl Albert boys scored 94 points to defend the 5A title thanks to wins in the 4x100 (1:26.01) and 4x400 (3:17.83).

Kyler Brown from Booker T. Washington ran an all-conditions Oklahoma best of 10.12 in the 100 meters in the prelims. He came back for the final and won it in 10.38. He also won the 200 in 21.25. 

Class 3A/4A - Plainview High

The Lincoln Christian boys and girls swept the 4A state titles. On the girls side, Lincoln Christian, who won the 5A title a year ago, won another state title with 96 points.

In the sprints, Douglass’ Brianna Jones won the 100 (12.19), 200 (25.09), 400 (55.27) and ran the anchor for the winning 4x400 (3:54.45). 

The Lincoln Christian boys tallied an impressive 131 points and were led by a strong showing in the distance events. Sophomore Ty Brooks won the 800 (1:55.14), 1,600 (4:25.02) and 3,200 (9:21.92) and was the anchor for the winning 4x800 relay that was the only team to go under 8 minutes (7:56.28) and breaking a 4A state record. 

The Washington girls repeated as 3A champs with 112 points winning the 4x200 (1:43.11) and 4x400 (3:58.64). Washington was second in the 4x100 (48.99). 

The battle for the 3A boys title was much tighter, as Rejoice Christian just edged out Millwood, 73-72, to claim the state championship. Oklahoma Christian was third with 71 points. 

Class 1A-2A - Western Heights 

In 2A, the Tonkawa girls scored 100 points to deny Hooker a repeat title. Hooker finished a close second with 94 points. Tonkawa freshman Cabrey Boland won the 800 (2:18.83), was third in the 400 (59.53) and ran on the winning 4x800 relay (9:51.07). 

Stroud junior Peyton Davis shined on the track, winning the 100 (11.95), 200 (24.64) and 100 hurdles (14.58). 

The Hooker boys repeated as the 2A state champions, putting up 117 points and sweeping the relay titles with victories in the 4x100 (42.480), 4x200 (1:28.12), 4x400 (3:22.60) and 4x800 (8:16.53). 

In the distance events, Regent Prep’s Clay McKinney won the 800 (1:58.19), 1,600 (4:29.86) and 3,200 (9:49.48).  

The Cyril girls were led by the one-two punch of senior Hadley Gibson and junior Makenzie Raasch as they led their team to a 1A state title. 

Gibson captured the 200 dash title in 25.31 and finished second in the 100 (12.31), while Raasch won the 100 hurdles (15.89) and 300 hurdles (46.86). Both ran on the winning 4x100 (50.33) and 4x200 (1:46.32). 

The Okeene boys scored 94.50 points to win the 1A title. 

Mark Bishop from Garber ran 10.55 in the prelims of the 100 and won the final in 10.65. He also won the 200 in 21.90.
