RENTON, Wash. – Jane Hedengren hasn’t faced a ton of challenges this year.

Temperatures rising to 88 degrees at the Brooks PR Invitational may have presented her most difficult racing conditions of the season.

“Not ideal conditions, but I like a challenge,” Hedengren said with a smile.

The Timpview UT graduate conquered both the heat and crushed another national record, running 9 minutes, 17.75 seconds for the 2-mile at Renton Memorial Stadium on Sunday, shattering her own national record by 17 seconds from the Arcadia Invitational in April. Only seven women in American history have run faster.

“I knew I was in a good spot; training’s been going well,” Hedengren said. “I’ve been able to stay consistent and happy. The sky’s the limit, just trying to see what that was today.”

This performance comes three days after running the third-fastest all-time World U-20 mile in 4:23.50 at the HOKA Festival of Miles in St. Louis.

“Thursday was amazing, today was amazing, I just love racing,” Hedengren said. “It’s really special to come out here and have people support just see what you’ve been training for and see where you’re at.”

Hedengren went through her first mile in 4:41.16, then finished the latter in a 4:36.59. Her second mile would have won the girls mile, while her 2-mile would have beaten three boys.

Hedengren also shattered the U.S. U-20 record for the 3,000 by 14 seconds with her en route time of 8:40.99. She also was clocked at 3,200 meters in 9:14.65.

She owns every high school outdoor record from 1,600 meters to 5,000. She holds nine high school records between indoors and outdoors.

“It’s not me, it’s God,” Hedengren said. “Everything I’ve done that’s happened this season has been out of my control. I’ve been trying to do the best I can, trying to let that glory show and that talent show this gift that God has given me. Grateful for the opportunity; it’s a privilege.”

Rylee Blade (Santiago Corona CA) finished second in a new lifetime best of 9:57.10 for US#2, beating Hanne Thomsen (Montgomery CA) in a US#3 10:00.41 for third. Thomsen beat Blade at the California state meet by two seconds in the 3,200.

Chloe Huyler (Lakeridge OR) ran US#4 10:01.07, Sophia Rodriguez (Mercer Island WA) ran US#9 10:07.83 and Addison Ritzenhein (Niwot CO) ran US#10 10:08.87 to finish third, fourth and fifth.

The meet’s longest-standing record, the girls 800 meters, fell at the hands of Paige Sheppard (Union Catholic NJ) in a new sophomore class record 2:01.50, besting Alexa Efraimson’s time of 2:03.26 from the 2014 meet.

Sophia Gorriaran, running for Harvard at this next week’s NCAA championships, held the previous sophomore class record in 2:02.26.

Sheppard made an aggressive move with under 150 meters to go, flying right past US#1 Emmry Ross (Onsted MI), who ran a 58-second first lap. Ross also finished under Efraimson’s meet record in 2:02.83 for second.

Oluwatosin Awoleye (South Cobb GA) claimed third in 2:03.99 and HOKA Festival of Miles 800 champion Elyse Wilmes was fourth in 2:04.42.

Hedengren's high school teammate, Lily Alder (Timpview UT), delivered a US#5 mile time of 4:37.35 to get the win over Claire Stegall (Nolensville TN), who ran US#6 4:38.45. Sophia Bendet (Universal City TX) and Alexa Matora (Lake Washington WA) ran lifetime bests in 4:41.82 and 4:44.40 to finish third and fourth, respectively.

Mia Maxwell (Humble Atascocita TX) won the girls 100 in a US#2 11.04. Her twin, Mariah, finished second in a personal best 11.28, moving her to US#9.

Anisa Bowen-Fontenot (San Diego CA) beat Jasmine Robinson (North Cobb GA) for the third time this season in the 100 hurdles, running 13.19. Bowen-Fontenot earned wins over Robinson at both the Texas Relays and Arcadia Invitational earlier this season.

Natalie Dumas (Eastern Senior NJ) took home top honors in the girls 400 in 52.40.

Seventh grader Camryn Dailey (Track Xplosion Elite NC) ran faster than the winning high school time in the junior race, running a middle school national record 51.67.

Eastlake Track Club broke the all-time Washington record in the 4x800 relay with a winning time of 9:00.02, good for US#14.

In the professional races that began the day's schedule, Valery Tobias of Brooks Beasts won the women's 800 meters in 2:02.00.
