HOKA ONE ONE Postal Nationals Announces 2018 National Champions

Cardinal Gibbons Girls and Weddington Boys crowned as champions of the two-mile high school team competition

(GOLETA, Calif.), December 6, 2018 — HOKA ONE ONE®, a division of Deckers Brands (NYSE: DECK), announces the girls of Cardinal Gibbons XC Club (Raleigh, North Carolina) and the boys of the Weddington XC Club (Matthews, North Carolina), as the winners of the 2018 HOKA ONE ONE Postal Nationals Championship. Both clubs ran their champion efforts at the highly competitive Southeast Flagship event in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

This is the fifth year the HOKA ONE ONE Postal Nationals Championship has been held to determine the fastest collective girls’ and boys’ high-school cross-country programs in the nation. The girls of Cardinal Gibbons ran an outstanding average time of 11:24 for their second national title in three years, while the Weddington boys earned top honors with a 9:34 two-mile average. Both squads bested over 750 other high school teams in the largest Postal Nationals in the event’s history. North Carolina schools dominated the top spots: in addition to housing both the girls’ and boys’ team champions, North Carolina is home to the boys’ team runner-up, Cary XC Club, whose average time was within a second of Weddington’s.

“The HOKA ONE ONE Postal Nationals represent grassroots and developmental running at their finest, and the marquis events, with teams running under the lights, are the sort of thing that can build a lifelong love of running,” said Mike McManus, Senior Manager of Sports Marketing at HOKA ONE ONE. “HOKA is proud to support not only the Postals events, but running in general at its most developmental levels, where we believe the future of the sport resides.”

Reviving a tradition from the 1970s, the HOKA ONE ONE Postal Nationals empowers high school cross-country teams from every state to compete against each other in timed two-mile races on the track, which can be held anywhere in the country and at any point in the season. To receive a ranking, teams average and then submit the time of their top five finishers. The competition provides a format where every team in the country gets the chance to compete for a national championship.

“We always have a great time getting to run 2-miles at the end of the cross-country season. I thought the girls did great,” said Nick Mangum, Cardinal Gibbons Head Coach. “I’m very proud of them.”
