Great Oak became the first California boys team in the meet's 20-year history to win the 5-kilometer Nike Race of Champions at the Great American Cross Country Festival at WakeMed Park in Cary, N.C. Great Oak prevailed against two-time Race of Champions winner and back-to-back Nike Cross Nationals champion Loudoun Valley VA by a 69-108 margin. Chris Verdugo (15:10.2) was 11th, Cole Sawires Yager (15:15.5) placed 15th, Gabe Abbes (15:17.4) took 19th, John Worthy (15:22.1) secured 22nd and Aric Reza (15:24.6) earned 26th, with Christian Simone (15:34.2) finishing 39th and Mateo Joseph (15:37.3) rounded out the Wolfpack lineup in 49th place. Great Oak also eclipsed the 2012 all-time team mark of 77 minutes by Christian Brothers Academy NJ, running 76:29, in addition to the Wolfpack becoming only the second program in meet history to sweep both boys and girls team titles in the same year, joining Saratoga Springs NY in 2005.
