Reigning U.S. Indoor 400-meter champion Rashard Clark discusses with DyeStat editor Erik Boal about his mother Rosalyn being an LAPD officer for more than 30 years before she retired in 2017 and how the family has reacted to the police misconduct in the aftermath of the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, along with other African-Americans. Clark, the 2012 California state 400 champion, reflects on his freshman year at Susan Miller Dorsey High in Los Angeles when he and two African-American peers were harrassed by police officers, including being handcuffed and placed on the ground, since they matched the description of robbery subjects in the same neighborhood. Clark, who went on to become a National Junior College Athletic Association Division 1 champion at Western Texas College as well as an NCAA Division 2 national champion at Texas A&M Commerce, also revisits his experiences as an African-American student-athlete competing in Texas. He reacts to the recent protests around the country and whether they will lead to any reforms, both in law enforcement and within the African-American community. Clark examines his prospects in 2021 and shares the confidence and belief he gained from winning his first indoor national title this year. He also talks about the opportunity for athletes in track and field to use their platform to bring more education and awareness to racial and human rights inequalities and injustices within society.
