Auburn fifth-year senior Kylee Carter, the reigning Southeastern Conference champion and NACAC U-23 women's javelin gold medalist, discusses with DyeStat editor Erik Boal about the recent protest she attended in her community in Alabama in support of "Black Lives Matter." Carter, a favorite to capture the javelin title at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships on the same day she would be celebrating her 23rd birthday, reveals she will be returning to compete during her final spring season next year and what her emotions are about not being able to challenge for a title this week in Austin, Texas, where she finished second last year. Carter revisits her experiences being raised in a mixed race family and shares some of the emotional discussions she has recently had with family members regarding racism, human rights, inequality and injustice in our society. She also examines how her Christian faith and education has allowed her to enlighten people of all backgrounds in an effort to promote reform within her community. Carter has challenged Auburn athletes to be greater advocates and also for fans of Tigers' athletics to be supporters of African-American student-athletes whether or not they are competing for the university. Carter speaks about the importance of voting in the upcoming elections, in addition to looking ahead to 2021 and her prospects of not only capturing a Division 1 championship, but also challenging for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
