Six-time U.S. women's pole vault national champion and 2018 World Indoor gold medalist Sandi Morris joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her virtual participation July 9 in the Inspiration Games, as well as hosting a women's only competition July 15 at her new community pole vault pit in South Carolina. Morris explains a cartilege issue in her knee that kept her from competing May 16 in the Ultimate Garden Clash virtual event involving Katerina Stefanidi, Katie Nageotte and Alysha Newman, and how her rehabilitation has been progressing in preparation to compete in three weeks in Florida. She also talks about how impressed she was with the endurance of her peers to complete more than 30 vaults in 30 minutes. Morris revisits the time spent with her father, Harry, during the four weeks required to build a runway for her "Pink Panther" pole vault pit in Greenville and what it means to be able to not only train, but host events in the community, especially since her annual Liberty Bridge Jumpoff event will not be showcased this year as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. Morris also shares how inspired she has been by fellow American track and field athletes sharing their voices, especially Tianna Bartoletta, in support of "Black Lives Matter" and how she hopes to use her platform to be an ally and advocate for change in the future. She also reflects on her indoor competition Feb. 19 in Lievin, France, when she and Armand "Mondo" Duplantis were both attempting world records on separate runways, and how much she is looking forward to Sept. 2 in Lausanne, Switzerland, when both female and male vaulters will be competing simultaneously on separate runways as part of the Wanda Diamond League event.
