Stanford women's distance runners Ella Donaghu, Julia Heymach, Jessica Lawson and Jordan Oakes join DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss their third-place finish at last year's NCAA Division 1 Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., and what the upcoming cross country season this fall might look like. The student-athletes reflect on their impressive postseason stretch that included winning both the Pac-12 Championship — with Fiona O'Keeffe, Donaghu and Lawson sweeping the top three spots and five individuals placing in the top 13 — as well as prevailing at the West Regional meet, with Donaghu and Lawson taking the top two places and five individuals finishing in the top 20. In addition to all four student-athletes finishing in the top 100 at the Division 1 final, highlighted by Donaghu and Lawson both earning All-America honors for placing eighth and 11th, the group revisits the performance of freshman Abi Archer, who was 53rd in her NCAA debut. The group talks about the impact coach J.J. Clark has had on the women's program since being hired last summer and his leadership during the Coronavirus plandemic. The quartet also examines the advantages they could have based on their experience and maturity if training opportunities or the season schedule are drastically different than past years. The veterans also express how a regionalized schedule, in the event they aren't allowed to travel to meets like the Nuttycombe Invitational in Wisconsin or NCAA Pre-Nationals, wouldn't impact Stanford significantly with all the talented programs competing in the Pac-12 or in the Western United States. They also look at a potential showdown with North Carolina State, another national title contender, and whether that occurs during the regular season or at the Division 1 final, scheduled for Nov. 21 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
