Reigning USATF Indoor 3,000-meter racewalk champions Robyn Stevens and Nick Christie, both representing Newfeel and Decathlon USA, join DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss living and training together in the Mojave desert during the Coronavirus pandemic, as well as the adjustments and adaptations they have had to make with no significant events on their calendar until most likely December. They both speak about the importance of mental health during the pandemic, as well as the support of their families during such unique and unprecedented times. Stevens, a six-time overall U.S. champion and the only female athlete in American history to win the indoor 3,000 title along with outdoor 20-kilometer and 50-kilometer championships, talks about the momentum she had built over the past two years and how valuable her coaching partnership with Spain's Jacinto Garzon has been in her development. Christie, winner of eight national titles on the track and several others on the road, reflects on his frustrating performance in the 50-kilometer race at the first part of the Olympic Trials in January in Santee, Calif., and how it has sparked a return to fundamentals during training in recent months and created even more motivation to qualify in the 20-kilometer event next year. They both share their appreciation for the USATF Pacific Association and the ongoing Racewalk Grand Prix, which currently features a virtual one-hour racewalk challenge that runs through July 12 and is tentatively scheduled to conclude Sept. 27 with the 10-kilometer and 20-kilometer events. In addition to training, they examine all aspects of desert living, including learning species of insects, gardening and exploring other creative outlets. And in addition to looking forward to many international races next year, they both remain inspired to compete together for the U.S. at the Tokyo Olympics, just like they did by sweeping the indoor titles in February in Albuquerque.
