Tennessee state indoor and outdoor record holder, along with two-time Foot Locker Cross Country All-American Jenna Hutchins, a rising junior at Science Hill High, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her recent 10:05 time trial in the 3,200 meters, along with her scheduled participation in another 3,200 race Aug. 15 at the Music City Distance Carnival, where she set the state record in the mile by running 4:43.33 last year. Hutchins shares how meaningful it was to race on the track for the first time in more than five months as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic and how significant it was to lower her previous personal best in the 3,200 of 10:15.39 from November. She reflects on her even pacing throughout the race and how unique it was to be on the track by herself, with only her mother Theresa in the stadium filming the race. Hutchins revisits her strong winter season, which included Tennessee state indoor records in the 1,500, 1,600, mile and 2-mile distances, as well as her appreciation for competing in the mile Feb. 8 at the NYRR Millrose Games, which was her last timed race before her 3,200 effort in Tennessee. Hutchins expresses her optimism for a cross country season taking place in Tennessee and examines the new freshmen class joining the Science Hill program and how much she looks forward to taking on a larger leadership role during her junior year. She also remains optimistic about competing at the Foot Locker South Regional and Foot Locker National Championships later this year, pursuing a third consecutive top-10 finish in her first three seasons, which has only previously been accomplished by four female runners in meet history. Hutchins also talks about earning her driver's license in May, in addition to keeping herself occupied with other activities, such as hiking and fishing, along with reading and baking.
