Adeline Johnson, a rising Branson School sophomore and California state record holder in the outdoor 3,000-meter racewalk, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her 13:46 in the racewalk, which elevated her to the No. 3 all-time prep performer, as well as her 5:07.3 personal best in the 1,600 meters achieved as part of the NSAF x AthleticNET Virtual Nationals during the Coronavirus pandemic. Johnson shares the integral roles her coach Gabe Palacio, along with officials Arun Vatturi and Diana Rossman, played in her being able to compete in virtual racewalk efforts on the track during the pandemic. She examines her improvement from clocking 15:35.79 in the 3,000 racewalk last year to 14:08.7 in May, which broke the 1999 California state record of 14:34.31 held by Vacaville graduate and six-time U.S. national champion Robyn Stevens, to breaking 14 minutes for the first time in June. Johnson reflects on the significance of role models like Stevens, who not only excelled in racewalking, but also cross country and track, as well as Taylor Ewert, a recent graduate of Beavercreek High in Ohio and an Arkansas signee. Johnson speaks about how the versatility of individuals like Ewert, the Gatorade Girls National Track and Field Athlete of the Year, has inspired her to improve in all aspects of distance training, including an emphasis this fall on training for cross country and the 3,200 on the track. Johnson also looks ahead to her transition to the 5,000- and 10,000-meter racewalk events, and her aspirations to compete at the USATF U-20 Championships next year. She expresses how instrumental the support of her family and Palacio have been in her development, and how important cross training on the exercise bike and in the pool have been in minimizing the risk of injuries. She revisits her transfer from Tamalpais High to Branson, and the adjustment not only to a new school, but to online education in the spring and again this upcoming fall semester. Johnson also talks about learning to sew from her grandmother and how she used opportunities during quarantine to continue to improve her craft.
