Reigning U.S. Indoor women's 60-meter hurdles champion Gabriele Cunningham, a three-time All-American at North Carolina State, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss training during the Coronavirus pandemic with coach Allen Johnson and her decision not to compete outdoors this year and focus on her preparation for 2021. Cunningham reflects on her national title and personal-best 7.92 seconds in the 60 hurdles, which ranked 10th in the world during the indoor season, and how significant that achievement was in her first year as a professional athlete. She also shares how her improvement and confidence gained in the 60 hurdles were contributing to her becoming a stronger athlete in the 100-meter hurdles outdoors, with the goal of lowering her personal-best 12.99 in the next year. Cunningham examines how much she has benefited from the experience and wisdom of Johnson, a three-time World Indoor winner in the 60 hurdles, along with a four-time World Outdoor champion and 1996 Olympic gold medalist in the 110-meter hurdles. Cunningham expresses how significant her faith has been during such an uncertain time in her career, and conveys that positive mental health and discipline have been instrumental in allowing her to continue to develop as an athlete and a person in recent months. She also revisits how her singing has been a positive outlet for her during the pandemic and shares her future aspirations in several forms of art, including singing, dancing, modeling and acting. Cunningham also speaks about the challenges facing her family and members of their African-American community during a period of racial injustice, social unrest and human rights vulnerability in our country. She emphasizes the importance of voting in local, state and national elections, and the need for African-American voices to be amplified in order to contribute to future change and reform. Cunningham looks to continue to use her platform as an athlete, on and off the track, to uplift and unify people in her pursuit of competing at the Olympic Trials next year.
