Adams State fifth-year senior Kaylee Bogina, an NCAA Division 2 All-American in cross country and track, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss running a personal-best 16:17.35 to place 14th in the women's 5,000 meters Aug. 15 at Music City Distance Carnival at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tenn. Bogina, competing for the first time since Feb. 29 at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Championships in Colorado Springs, improved on her indoor personal best 16:40.74 and lowered her outdoor previous best of 17:11.80 from the Music City Distance Carnival at Vanderbilt in 2018. Bogina ascended to the No. 7 all-time performer in Adams State history and elevated to No. 35 on the all-dates 5,000 list in Division 2 history. She recaps the process of needing to have two negative COVID-19 tests in the week before the event, and how she had to anxiously wait until the night before the meet to learn the results of her second negative test. Bogina also reflects on her summer training in Gunnison with members of the Western Colorado men's team, including boyfriend Charlie Sweeney. Bogina expresses her desire to compete in another 5,000 in the coming months to pursue the 16-minute barrier and also how she feels her performance will benefit her pursuit of a Division 2 10,000-meter national title next year. She also examines how well athletes training in Colorado have performed this summer, including Air Force World Class Athlete Program member Hannah Everson, who won the 5,000 at Music City Distance Carnival in 15:31.97. She also shares the resilience that not only her Adams State teammates, but every program in the RMAC has had to demonstrate following the announcement that all NCAA Division 2 Championships would not be held in the fall. Bogina and her fellow distance athletes continue to focus on the 2021 outdoor season and their goal of leading Adams State to its first Division 2 women's outdoor track and field national championship.
