Arkansas' 31st-year head coach Lance Harter, who guided the Razorbacks to the 2019 triple crown by winning NCAA Division 1 championships in indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, as well as cross country, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the first Southeastern Conference athletic competition during the Coronavirus pandemic Sept. 19 at the cross country preview meet at LSU in Baton Rouge, La. Harter shares the safety guidelines and protocols that will be in place for the meet, which also includes Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Texas A&M, in addition to the need for both Arkansas men's and women's teams to fly on a private charter instead of a commerical flight to limit additional risks. He examines the limited schedule this fall, which also includes meets at Missouri and Texas A&M, before concluding Oct. 30 at the SEC Championship meet back at LSU. Harter speaks about the leadership of Lauren Gregory and Abby Gray, both returning members of last year's championship lineup, along with the arrival of veteran transfers Logan Morris from Clemson and Julia Paternain from Penn State, who join Tennessee-Chattanooga transfer Kennedy Thomson and Krissy Gear from Furman, who had already competed for the Razorbacks during indoor season. He also reflects on the summer progress made by freshmen Taylor Ewert and Corie Smith, part of a talented recruiting class, and how they will be expected to be significant contributors to Arkansas' lineup this fall. Harter analyzes the challenge of the Razorbacks winning an eighth consecutive SEC cross country title and 21st overall, especially against a veteran Ole Miss team that brings back its entire lineup from last year, along with the return of Australian talent Clio Ozanne-Jaques, who last competed in 2018. He also revisits fifth-year senior Taylor Werner clocking a personal-best 4:13.53 in the 1,500 meters racing unattached Aug. 15 at the Music City Distance Carnival in Nashville, Tenn., along with recent graduates Payton Chadwick and Taliyah Brooks enjoying success in recent weeks competing in Europe, including racing head to head in the 100-meter hurdles at the Rome Diamond League meeting and the Hanzekovic Memorial in Zagreb, Croatia.
