North Carolina State senior Hannah Steelman, an All-American in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track at Wofford before transferring to Raleigh to join the Wolfpack this summer, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss a 6-kilometer victory in 20:36.2 in her cross country debut Sept. 25 at the Virginia Tech Invitational, leading a sweep of the top five spots for her new team. Steelman expresses gratitude for the opportunity to train and compete with such a deep and motivated group, which features a mixture of veteran talent and promising freshmen. She reflects on her first summer of altitude training in Colorado and how instrumental that time was to allow her to bond with new teammates. Steelman revisits how impactful Wolfpack coach Laurie Henes was in making her transfer process smooth and how attending North Carolina State was the right environment and ideal fit during this chapter in her career. Steelman also examines the strength of the psychology curriculum at the university and how she shares the same major as roommate and teammate Elly Henes. Steelman also looks ahead to the first Wolfpack home meet Oct. 7, as well as her anticipation for the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships and a potential showdown with Florida State on Oct. 30 in Cary, N.C., and how those events remain the primary focus for North Carolina State, instead of the recently announced NCAA Division 1 Championships on March 15 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Steelman reminisces about last year's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas, where she became only the fourth female athlete in Division 1 history to earn All-America first-team honors in both the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000 meters in the same year, including only the second to achieve the feat on the same day. She also fondly remembers capturing a gold medal last July in the 3,000 steeplechase at the NACAC U-23 Championships in Queretaro, Mexico. Steelman speaks about the important role that faith plays in all aspects of her life and running career, along with her appreciation for the community outreach that North Carolina State continues to be involved in, especially with the Pack United program.
