Paige Sommers, a senior at Westlake High and the top girls field event recruit in the country in the Class of 2021, discusses her decision to sign with Duke University. Sommers, the California state and national junior class pole vault record holder at 14-6 (4.42m), chose the Blue Devils over Georgia, Michigan, Stanford and Washington among the schools she visited. Sommers, the No. 5 all-time prep performer, shares how Duke coach Brandon Wilbourn, a former decathlete and professional football player, was the first to approach her father, John, in the recruiting process in 2019 and was ultimately the deciding factor in her wanting to join the Blue Devils' program based on his vision for her entire career. Sommers, the reigning Gatorade state girls track and field athlete of the year, also reveals how connected she felt with the Duke campus and the community in Durham, N.C., and she looks forward to representing Westlake at the NCAA Division 1 level in the Atlantic Coast Conference and adding to the tradition of All-American pole vaulters at Duke, including Jillian Schwartz, Megan Clark and Madison Heath.
