Junior Angelina Perez of Lakeland Regional, a Northeast individual representative in the Nike Cross Virtual championship week, ran the fastest 5-kilometer cross country time by a female athlete in New Jersey prep history in any competition by clocking 16 minutes, 39 seconds Friday on her home course to take over the top spot among all girls entries nationally. The previous fastest time by a New Jersey high school female competitor in any 5-kilometer cross country race was 16:43.70 by Janet Smith of J.P. Stevens High in Edison to win the 1983 Kinney National Championships at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif. She also looks ahead to the Holmdel Invitational on Nov. 25 and the opportunity to run again with her teammates at Holmdel Park, along with competing against fellow junior Charlotte Bednar of The Lawrenceville School, a two-time NXN All-American.
