Washington graduate and professional pole vaulter Olivia Gruver, the women's collegiate outdoor record holder at 15-6.25 (4.73m) and No. 2 all-time NCAA indoor performer at 15-5 (4.70m), in addition to being a two-time Division 1 outdoor champion in 2017 and 2018 at Kentucky, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss improving her own Dempsey Indoor facility record Jan. 29 by clearing 15-3.75 (4.67m) at the Washington Indoor Preview. Gruver revisits her season-opening series, including her third-attempt clearance at 15-3.75, which has her ranked as the No. 2 American and equal to fourth in the world this year after Sandi Morris cleared 15-9.25 (4.81m) on Jan. 31 at the American Track League event at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. Gruver also reveals that she will be competing Feb. 7 at the third American Track League indoor competition, looking forward to squaring off against several elite American and Canadian vaulters. She reflects on her first year as a professional athlete and the challenges of traveling on her own to outdoor events, where Gruver vaulted three times in July in Georgia and South Carolina, along with the ability to continue to work with Washington coach Toby Stevenson as a post-graduate competitor, as well as being represented by agents Paul Doyle and Jeff Hartwig. Gruver examines her fall training with Stevenson and her ability to consistently get on bigger poles in workouts, in addition to her quest to achieve a new personal best, which she attempted Jan. 29 by taking three unsuccessful tries at 15-7.25 (4.76m). She analyzes the current depth of American women's pole vaulting at the professional, collegiate and high school levels, and how the Olympic Trials in June at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., could be one of the strongest competitions in the history of the event. Gruver also expresses her gratitude for the Ultimate Garden Clash pole vault and multi-event competitions being showcased during the summer, as well as the four American Track League indoor meets being broadcast on the ESPN family of networks.
