North Carolina A&T sophomore All-American Cambrea Sturgis, a five-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her preparation for the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships on June 9-12 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., along with the Olympic Trials from June 18-27 at the same venue. Sturgis reflects on her memorable performances May 29 at the Division 1 East Regional at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, where she ran wind-legal efforts of 10.92 in the 100-meter dash and 22.26 in the 200 meters. Sturgis elevated to the No. 5 wind-legal competitor in collegiate in the 100 and 15th all-time in the 200. She also ascended to No. 4 in the United States in both events this year, along with ranking No. 5 in the world in the 200 and No. 8 in the 100. Sturgis also teamed with Kamaya Debose-Epps, Symone Darius and Jonah Ross to run 42.92 in the 4x100 relay advance to the national semifinals in that event as well. She revisits a challenging indoor season and how it created more determination and motivation for Sturgis to excel during the outdoor schedule. Sturgis also reminisces about the 2019 outdoor final in Austin, Texas, where she placed third in the 200 and sixth in the 4x100 relay, along with 11th in the 100, and how much she has improved with her starts since then. She analyzes the potential showdowns involving herself, Tamara Clark of Alabama, Kemba Nelson of Oregon and Twanisha "Tee Tee" Terry in the 100, in addition to matching up against Anavia Battle of Ohio State, Favour Ofili of LSU and Clark in the 200. Sturgis shares the inspiration both the men's and women's teams at North Carolina A&T have to represent all Historically Black Colleges and Universities, along with their quest to be respected as an elite track and field program, regardless of conference, school size or geography. Sturgis examines the potential for the North Carolina A&T men's 4x400 relay to achieve the collegiate record at the Division 1 Outdoor Championships after running No. 3 all-time 2:59.21 at the regionals, along with the impact she and several other Aggies, including 2019 indoor 200 national champion Kayla White, could have at the Olympic Trials.
