Javianne Oliver, a Nike professional athlete and Olympian in the 100-meter dash and 4x100-meter relay pool, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in Tokyo and qualifying for her first Olympics after previously representing the United States in the 60-meter dash at the 2018 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, England. Oliver, a former University of Kentucky standout, ran under 11 seconds in all three rounds June 18-19 at the U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., including a wind-legal personal-best 10.96 and an all-conditions best with a wind-aided 10.83, followed by a 10.99 in the final to place second. She examines the prospects of herself and fellow Americans Teahna Daniels and Jenna Prandini in the 100, and having to compete July 30-31 against Jamaican stars Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shericka Jackson. She also analyzes the challenges facing the U.S. in the quest to secure a third consecutive Olympic 4x100 relay gold medal Aug. 5-6, and explains the factors that contribute to a strong relay lineup. Oliver shares her desire to lead off the relay and explores the potential lineup combinations with a group that also includes Gabby Thomas, Aleia Hobbs and English Gardner, the lone remaining member from the 2016 Olympic relay pool in Rio de Janeiro. She explains how unique it will be to compete without fans and with only coaches and teammates present in the stadium. Oliver reflects on the confidence she gained from the three races she ran in Oregon, in addition to the wind-legal 10.97 she ran May 9 at the USATF Golden Games at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. She speaks about the mental strength necessary to qualify at the Olympic Trials, which she hopes will benefit her again in Tokyo. Oliver also revisits her return trip to France to race in early July and what it meant to receive support from the local fans after she competed indoors at three meets in the country in February.
