Gabby Scott, the national record holder for Puerto Rico in the indoor 600 meters at 1:28.30 and the world indoor 500-meter leader this year at 1:11.24, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to reflect on friend and training partner Jasmine Camacho-Quinn becoming the first athlete in Puerto Rico's history to earn an Olympic gold medal in track and field with her victory Aug. 2 in the 100-meter hurdles final in 12.37 seconds in Tokyo. Scott, the reigning national champion for Puerto Rico in the 400-meter hurdles and the 2019 NCAA Division 1 runner-up at Colorado, shares how impactful the female representation is on the global stage for Puerto Rico following Monica Puig's tennis gold medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She also examines how meaningful it was to see Camacho-Quinn wearing the Flor de Maga, the national flower of Puerto Rico, in her hair on the awards podium. The only previous Olympic track and field medal for Puerto Rico prior to Tokyo was Javier Culson earning bronze in the men's 400-meter hurdles in 2012. Scott, who hosts the podcast We Were The Best of Friends, Until We Weren't, also shares her reactions to world records being set in the women's and men's 400-meter hurdles in Tokyo, along with analyzing the women's 800-meter final and women's 4x400-meter relay championship. Scott, who represented Puerto Rico at the 2019 Pan American Games in Peru, shares her aspirations to compete at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon.
