Raevyn Rogers, the reigning Olympic bronze medalist in the women's 800 meters along with a World Outdoor silver medalist in the 800 and World Indoor gold medalist in the 4x400 relay following a career at the University of Oregon where she captured six NCAA Division 1 titles and earned the Bowerman Award in 2017, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the recent recognition in her home state of Texas at both her alma mater, The Kinkaid School, as well as by the Houston Texans. Rogers, 25, explains how significant it was to be honored by the Texans after her grandfather was previously recognized by the organization for coaching football, basketball and track and field at Jones High. She also shares how meaningful it was to be honored by Kinkaid School with "Raevyn Rogers Day" and how she aspires to work with her mother Rhonda to be able to organize HISD track and field events in the future, in addition to creating opportunities for student-athletes in the Houston and Jefferson City communities to be able to reach their goals in high school and beyond. Rogers reflects on how Kinkaid School and her family and support system growing up and playing three sports helped her develop into such a competitive athlete, and how that determination and desire to excel has evolved throughout her career at Oregon and now as a Nike professional athlete training under coach Pete Julian. Rogers revisits the challenges she had to overcome ahead of the U.S. Olympic Trials, including recovering from being diagnosed as anemic less than six weeks away from trying to qualify for her first Olympics in Tokyo. Rogers also analyzes the pressure she and several other athletes with ties to Oregon and the Ducks program encountered while competing at the Trials, and how surviving the three rounds at Hayward Field helped build confidence ahead of racing in Japan. She also speaks about the consistency showcased at national and global championships throughout her career, along with her quest to become one of the most accomplished athletes of her generation. Rogers also expresses how significant her faith has been throughout the year and the entire COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the support of all the members in the training group led by Julian, and how they have helped her become a better athlete and teammate.
