Florida junior and U.S. Olympian Jasmine Moore, an All-American in the long jump and triple jump as well as the reigning Southeastern Conference indoor and outdoor champion in the latter event, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her move from Georgia to Florida and preparing to make her debut for the Gators on Jan. 14 at the Clemson Invitational. Moore, the National Federation High School record holder in the triple jump at Mansfield Lake Ridge High in Texas and 2019 Gatorade National Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year, placed 12th in her qualifying group and 23rd overall July 30 in Tokyo with an effort of 45-1.75 (13.76m). During her career at Georgia, Moore, 20, elevated to the No. 3 all-time collegiate outdoor competitor in the triple jump at 47-2.50 (14.39m) and equal to 11th in the outdoor long jump at 22-5 (6.83m), along with No. 15 in the indoor triple jump at 45-10 (13.97m). She shares her decision to depart Georgia after Petros Kyprianou stepped down as head coach and how she chose Florida to continue her collegiate career, including some encouragement from current roommate and 400-meter standout Talitha Diggs. Moore examines how significant it has been to have former Georgia teammate and close friend Anna Hall also join the Gators program, and how it has impacted the overall depth of the jumps group in the Florida program. She analyzes the benefit of training with fellow All-Americans Claire Bryant and Natricia Hooper, and how competitive the environment is during workouts. Moore also speaks about her collaboration with jumps coach Nic Petersen and how much improvement she has seen in her long jump, in addition to her ability to connect with the board better in her triple jump. She explains how meaningful it has been to learn from Florida head coach Mike Holloway, and how all the event groups continue to support one another in pursuit of challenging for team titles in the SEC, as well as at the Division 1 championship meet in March. Moore revisits how much she learned competing at the Olympics, not just from fellow American triple jumpers Keturah Orji and Tori Franklin, but also from watching elite international athletes. She reflects on how inspiring it was to watch Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela not only capture the gold medal, but smash the world record on her final attempt with a 51-5 (15.67m) performance. Moore looks forward to competing against reigning Division 1 indoor and outdoor triple jump champion Ruth Usoro of Texas Tech and fellow All-American Ruta Lasmane, a transfer from Florida State who has joined the Red Raiders, in addition to Deborah Acquah of Texas A&M and Charisma Taylor of Tennessee, a transfer from Washington State, in her pursuit of winning an NCAA title.
