Lauren Gale, an Olympic 4x400-meter relay alternate for Canada and a Mountain West Conference indoor and outdoor 400-meter champion for Colorado State, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss running the fastest indoor 400 time in Canadian history at 51.53 seconds Jan. 29 at the Colorado Invitational on the 300-meter flat track at the facility in Boulder, in addition to anchoring another Rams' program record 3:36.28 in the 4x400. Gale, 22, took over the collegiate lead in the event, in addition to her altitude conversion of 51.64 being faster than the 1992 Canadian standard of 51.69 established by Jillian Richardson. Gale revisits being the youngest member of the Canadian track and field roster that was selected for Tokyo and watching Alicia Brown, Madeline Price, Kyra Constantine and Sage Watson run 3:21.84 in the final to place fourth. She reflects on Australian Tom Willems also running a program record 46.54 in the 400 before her race at the Colorado Invitational and the motivation Gale gained from his performance. Gale, who has run sub-52 indoors and outdoors in her career, joined former NCAA Division 1 400 champions Kendall Ellis of USC, Shakima Wimbley of Miami (Florida) and Lynna Irby of Georgia in running an indoor time that fast in January. She shares how meaningful it was to conclude the meet by teaming with Yolonda Johnson, Jessica Ozoude and Grace Goldsworthy to eclipse the 4x400 indoor program record and elevate to No. 13 among collegiate programs, with the goal of ascending into the top 12 to make the Division 1 indoor championship meet March 11-12 at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Gale, who competed on the Colorado State 4x100 relay that reached the Division 1 outdoor semifinals in 2019, shares her motivation to qualify for an indoor championship meet for the first time and to have the opportunity to run both the 400 and the 4x400, and expresses gratitude for her collaboration with sprint coach J.J. Riese. She also examines her potential to represent Canada in July at the World Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., and using that as inspiration to be able to compete again after racing in 2018 in the 200 meters at the World Under-20 Championships in Finland. Gale also speaks about her contributions to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and all the initiatives and programs they have organized and coordinated during her career.
