Reigning NCAA Division 1 outdoor 5,000-meter champion and an adidas professional athlete Elly Henes, only the second female athlete to win both the mile and 3,000 meters in the same year which she achieved Feb. 5 at the Camel City Invitational at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C., joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in the women's 3,000-meter final Feb. 27 at the USATF Indoor Championships Presented by BD, at The Podium in Spokane, Wash. Henes, 23, revisits her personal-best 15:03.27 effort Feb. 11 in the 5,000 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University that secured the World Outdoor Championships standard and elevated her to the No. 10 competitor in U.S. Indoor history. She also reflects on her personal-best 8:49.52 performance Jan. 29 in the 3,000 at the 114th Millrose Games at The Armory in New York, and examines the depth of the field that is scheduled to compete at USATF Indoors. Henes expresses gratitude for the opportunity to practice in Flagstaff, Ariz., under the guidance of Northern Arizona coach Mike Smith, and train with HOKA professional athlete and U.S. Olympian Rachel Smith, the coach's wife. She explains her development and improvement during the past six months as a professional athlete, including running personal-best marks of 4:09.33 in the 1,500 meters and 4:32.84 in the mile, and how much she learned following her sixth-place finish in the 5,000 in June at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Henes shares how meaningful the team culture was during her North Carolina State career and how special it was to watch the Wolfpack win the Division 1 women's cross country team title Nov. 20 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla., and for her mother Laurie Henes to continue to build momentum with the group during the indoor season, as the team has five potential national qualifiers in the 3,000, a pair in the 5,000, as well as the distance medley relay that could compete March 11-12 at the NCAA championship meet at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. She also speaks about how significant it is to be part of the current group of elite women's distance runners under age 25 in the U.S., and shares future ambitions to represent the country internationally.
