Nicola Ader, a German standout at Nevada-Reno and an NCAA Division 1 Indoor and Outdoor All-American along with being selected as the most outstanding performer at the Mountain West Conference Championships after winning the high jump and placing in the top three in the 100-meter hurdles, long jump and javelin throw, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing at her third career outdoor final in the women's heptathlon June 10-11 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Ader, a Mountain West indoor and outdoor champion, reflects on having to withdraw from the heptathlon competition last year after three events as a result of injury and her motivation to complete both days and all seven events in her final collegiate competition. She also revisits not being able to qualify for the Division 1 indoor pentathlon in March after falling in the 60-meter hurdles, the first event, and not scoring at the conference final in February in Albuquerque, N.M. Ader examines her personal-best 5,836 points in April at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University and her quest to surpass the 6,000-point mark at the NCAA championship meet. She shares the inspiration gained from Colorado State All-American Lexie Keller and her third-place performance in the indoor pentathlon at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala., and their quest to both secure first-team All-America honors, which would be the first for Nevada in the heptathlon since 1995. Ader explains her decision to only focus on the heptathlon at the outdoor final after competing in the high jump, long jump and heptathlon at the 2019 Division 1 championship meet in Austin, Texas. She analyzes taking on four events at the conference meet at Buchanan High's Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Calif., and scoring 32 points, along with having the opportunity to long jump at the West Regional in Arkansas. Ader also speaks about her gesture to have all Nevada student-athletes wearing green ribbons in support of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, and her ambitions to continue to bring awareness to the challenges that competitors, especially women, face in colleigate athletics. She expresses gratitude for coach Scott Williamson and the strong support system she has developed at Nevada, including her sports psychologist, and looks forward to pursuing a Masters degree and having the opportunity to get involved with collegiate coaching. Ader also emphasizes how instrumental her faith has been in demonstrating reslience and perseverance throughout her career and how meaningful it is to her to be considered one of the most impactful and inspiring student-athletes in Nevada history.
