Gianna Woodruff, a Nike professional athlete representing Panama and a three-time World Championships qualifier in the women's 400-meter hurdles as well as an Olympic finalist by placing seventh in Tokyo, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing July 19 at the World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Woodruff, who trains in Texas with reigning World champion and 2016 Olympic gold medalist Dalilah Muhammad of the United States under the guidance of coach Lawrence "Boogie" Johnson, is the only female athlete representing Panama at the meet in Oregon. She reflects on her previous appearances in 2017 in London and 2019 in Doha, advancing to the semifinals at both events, and her motivation at age 28 to follow the breakthrough in Tokyo by reaching the July 22 final in Eugene. Woodruff, an All-American at Washington, speaks about competing at the renovated Hayward Field and her return to the same track where she achieved her lifetime-best 54.20 seconds in August at the Prefontaine Classic to lower her own national record and produce the fastest all-time performance by a South American competitor. She examines the consistency in her performances at the end of last season, including sub-55 efforts in her final four races, along with four more this year since her outdoor schedule began in April. Woodruff analyzes the potential to produce a sub-54 performance for the first time and the confidence she has gained this year, especially after winning June 12 at the New York Grand Prix at Icahn Stadium in 54.35. She also explains how meaningful it was to compete in front of the New York audience, with her father being from the area. Woodruff expresses gratitude for the support of family, friends, training partners and coach Johnson, and shares how significant her faith has been during her journey from St. Mary's Academy in California to Washington and especially as a professional athlete. Woodruff also talks about her goals to conduct youth camps in Panama in the fall and her ambition to be a role model and ambassador for women and young athletes in her country.
