Quenton Lanese, an 11-year-old athlete representing Barron Park Striders and Washington Middle School, won the boys 11-12 title in the 3,000-meter final in a national age group record 9:31.17 at the USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships at Hornet Stadium at Sacramento State. Lanese eclipsed the 1998 mark of 9:38.52 achieved in 1998 by Chris Dominic from California.

My cousin and I watched Quenton running his record smashing 3000m totally unaware of who he was. As the laps ticked by, I commented "look at this little guy moving up through the pack". As the race proceeded he kept picking off runners and then "wow he's in 3rd.! This kid is amazing!". Never dreaming of what was coming. The long devastating kick that cut down the also record breaking front runner. Leg tempo was like a 100m man.

I wish this race were on YouTube. It would be a wonderful teacher of peace knowledge and discipline. Kudos to Quenton.
